Gonna say not a chance on that being a tig x planiceps. He just needs to be fattened up to show off that amazing pattern. :) Looks to be on death's door and whoever is feeding him live could be giving him parasites, or other illnesses.

Cliff do you have any pics of your big avatar guy as a lil' one? I don't recall ever seeing baby pics of him.

I bought him at around 19" if I remember correctly. :) I drove to Seattle Wash. 12 hrs one way picked him and 3 other catfish up, and drove them the 12 hrs back the other way and went to work lol. Here's the smallest he ever was for me.
That pic is about 3 days after I got him. :) He nearly doubled in length for me though.

Here's a pic of the same fish' skull(not yet finished)

Just found evidence that there is this hybrid also. :)

Pseudoplatystoma corruscans × Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum

very nice thread :) didnt realise there were so many hybrid cats out there....Any pics/info on other tsn species? Are they even considered hybrids or are there just multiple sub species (i never did understand this lol I know one subspecies gets larger, i could also be totally wrong). I have 8 tsn in the same pond and there are clearly some different head shapes, body patterns and size differences. I also have a supposed 28" marbleXtsn ill post up for this thread :) great info...

Make a new thread here in the catfish section so we can try to identify your tsn species. There are 7-8 recognized species of the Pseudoplatystoma genus depending on who you ask. :) there are subspecies, but they are not different enough to really consider. It is already tough enough to determine which species you have let alone which subspecies. Now that I have found this new document it seems that there may be the above mentioned hybrid being mixed into the lot and possibly accidentally released into the wild in SA. This poses an issue as these species are so genetically similar that their hybrids are fertile and can back cross as well. Would be nearly impossible to tell if you had the above hybrid and not just a pure species.

This is a sad pic of the tsnxmarble, my waters dirty they just ate yesterday but ill get more soon so we can see what it really is :) ive had this guy for 2 yrs. From 4".

When you get a chance can you use a regular cam instead of cell phone? that pic is so tiny I can't even decide which species TSN is there with it and the other one looks like an ink blot or something lol. :) thanks for sharing though. Not making fun just sayin! Pretty please with sugar on top! ;)
