Hybrid discussion from Mo's thread....

:iagree:

Baby steps.

As I said before:

Instead of focusing on the classification and nomenclature, show classes, etc, etc. of flowerhorns and other hybrids, I suggest that the organization focus on development of "guidelines for responsible fishkeeping" that includes sections both acknowledging the existence of hybrids and line bred fish in the hobby (as "man made cichlids") and describing ways that both wild-type and man-made cichlid keepers can be responsible fishkeepers.

A step that needs to happen before any kind of hybrid/flowerhorn competition at a convention is for the ACA leadership to acknowledge that conservation isn't a "flowerhorn vs. non-flowerhorn" issue but a "responsible fishkeeping vs. irresponsible fishkeeping" issue....and that there is a place for "man made cichlids" (flowerhorns, line bred, etc.) in the hobby if, like wild-type fish, they're kept and distributed responsibly.

Without this preliminary step, it will be a disaster of mis-guided emotion, anger, and blame...at the flowerhorn folks who volunteer to step forward and bridge the gap...

how about all the aca detractors com to the 09 convention, there are alot more people there that will make you feel welcome than will make you feel shunned. i attended my first convention this year and had a blast. while there was'nt any hybrid workshops, the responsible practices of keeping cichlids still applies. not sure how the aca will handle all of this hybrid stuff, but at the end of the day we are all fish keepers. hope to see you all in ohio in 09!

Yes there are properly mixed dog breeds but you don't see them in dog show and are not AKC certified-personally, if someone wants to own a hybrid that is their choice but putting them in the ACA -another story.

I'm sorry, but this is kind of funny. All dogs are hybrids. Check the history on differen't dogs. Many of them weren't recognised into their own category until they were bread for a few generations. Do you think that an English Bulldog is a pure species? It was a mix of bullmastiff and pug. All dogs were line bread to produce certain characteristics. I find this happening in the FH area as well. Kamalau, Red Dragon, SRT. Its like they are becoming their own lines with their own standards of quality.

I have to admit it is nice to know that you have a fish that is all natural and I can also agree that many species are mixed for the greed of the breeder. Just my 2 cents.
