I have heard that some hybrid males need to be a couple years old to fertilize. So I was wondering if a female might need a couple years also. I have a faded rt that I paired with a tex and they had 3 spawns together while she was around a year old. The eggs of the spawns on day one always looked good. They would look as healthy as any other pure females eggs. But on day 2 they would turn white. So she will be 3 in Febuary and I have pretty much labeled her sterile but I was just wondering if its worth the effort to try again?

YES IT IS......IYS NOT HER ITS HIM BC IF SHE WAS STERILE SHE WOULDNT B LAYING EGGS ...IF U CAN TRY ANOTHER MALE BUT ITS NOT HER

Lol thank you for the quick response. I would agree with you 100% BUT I have bred him with a female carpintis before they got together and had multiple succesful spawns. He passed away so I will have to try another male but the only thing that still holds me back is 100% of her eggs turning white within 24 hours of the spawns. A pure fertile females eggs that lays without a male can go a couple days before they turn white... Right? How often do pure bred males shoot complete blanks when they have had successful spawns? Hell after their third failure I bought him a bp and he fertilzed the whole batch like he was supposed to. So that is also why I am still a little confused by them not producing for me.
She is a mean alpha female that's very aggressive and hard to pair up. That's why I asked if it was worth the effort. I was sure it was all her fault and I thought she was a sterile egg laying female, but I will try again... Thank you!

Oh and I forgot to ask... So your saying there is no such thing as a sterile egg laying female? Also have you experienced a female spawning at an early age and the eggs not get fertilized, then trying at an older age and the eggs got fertized? Just asking have you experienced this and then later had success with the same female?

Yes .....I have thats why I suggested trying a more mature male and a sterile egg larlying female innever heard of 1......

Ok. I have never seen a whole batch of eggs turn white so fast. I have pics of her eggs the day of and the day after a spawn I will post later. I will try to pair her with this carpintis I have and I will share updates. Thanks

Here are some pics but I dont think they were from the day of the spawn because of the few white eggs... So they could have went 2 days before turning white. But like I said before... with him having successful spawns before and after, I ended up labeling her as sterile.

I had a similar experience with a female kkp I paired with multiple males (not at same time of course). I too was wondering if she was sterile. Three tries with three different males. She was an egg laying machine...500+ eggs during each spawn. The first two males failed. A third male finally succeeded but only managed to fertilized 30 eggs from the batch. I gave him a second shot...again, he only fertilized 25 eggs. I examined the eggs after each spawn and noticed that the eggs were not all the same size...some were half the size of others.

I'd like to point out that she was very aggressive with each male. Perhaps, she being so dominant may have had an affect on the males' ability to perform? Considering how my third male only fertilized so few eggs from large spawns. Just my thoughts from my experience.

Thanks for providing that info! She was definately rough with the male carpintis I had her with but I did see him go in the pot to try and fertilize. She is bigger, older, and stronger now so I will need a monster to tame her. I currently have a carpintis that's about 6" and she is about 8". Tried them and she tore him up. I'll find a male for her.
I believed Hybridcichlid... But at the same time I seen her spawns go unsuccessful with my own eyes, to where one saying its the males fault was hard to fully accept. Your story confirms his words... So thanks again.

Yes sometimes the female may not let the male do his thing right and that could have been part of the issue it does happen. I had a pure festae pair lay three batches of eggs earlier this year and none got fertilized, because the female laid in a big clay pot which she defended like crazy, and never let the male get in to do his business. After the third try he was so pissed off he tried killing her and everything else in the tank so now he chills alone hahah
