Hybrid Male Convict?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Based on a presentation on cryptoheros/amatitlania by Sam Borstien at the ACA convention in July, HRP's are most likely an undescribed species, and not one of the 4 recognized convict types. There is also speculation that there are other undescribed species, particularly the Rio Cabayo Siquia that have entered the hobby recently.

I can agree with you there. I have seen people sway one way or the other on this.... time for DNA testing! This reminds me of the first time EBJDs came into the picture and people thought it was an African/jack dempsy hybrid or a totally new species until they did DNA testing.

So my guy is in fact a (HRP) and not a regular convict? If that's the case should I remove the female in the tank with him, I'm 99% sure she's indeed a true convict.

Looks a lot like my male Convict. Mine has blue fins and a blue tint...also really light bluish flecks where the females have the orange on the belly. At first I thought he was a female because he had so much color, until they bred LOL

That's what I'm trying to figure out now. If he's a true HRP or just a regular convict I don't
need him cross breeding with the female I have him in with.

If you have no intention of distributing the fry then I wouldn't worry about that.
