Hybrid Red Belly Piranha?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've heard but have not researched myself that it's never been done in capacity...or discovered in the wild either

I think it could happen but I don't believe it. No pics?? Were they really small or was they lil bigger with some color?? Details!

it's actually not too uncommon. I have heard of alot of inter breeding with pygos, not sure about serras though.

it's difficult enough to have caribe breed with caribe in captivity let alone caribe with an other pygo species.
there are some rbps with black humeral spots but that doesn't mean it's caribe/rbp hybrid.
is it possible? I wouldn't rule that out but most likely it could just be a sells pitch, they can say whatever they want.
the only way of confirming would be doing DNA test, I don't think anyone wanna spend that kind of resource on a fish.

Where are you getting this information from reds and macs are the only piranha's that bred reg. in cap. ALL other p's have been rare (breeding wise) or hasn't happen (yet) I've heard of rhoms breeding once in a zoo and caribe I heard of couple times but no one has documented it Piraya's never Ternetzi I've "heard" maybe once if you have info in this that proves me wrong I'd love to know.........

it's funny where these cichlid keepers get their info :screwy:

The only species that consistently breed in captivity are Red Bellies. Macs, rhoms and possibly cariba's have also been bred atleast once but it happens so infrequently or under such specific circumstances that it is still incredibly difficult.
