Hybrid Red Belly Piranha?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well since none of us have seen a hybrid piranha before so even if we do see a picture we wouldn't know what to look for or expect, but I don't mind seeing some pics :)
since can't really tell the sex of piranhas from appearance along, I doubt they can do manual spawning, unless they get bunch of sexually matured caribes and rbps then cut them open to get to the eggs and sperms needed for manual spawning. I don't think anyone wanna go that route.

Sorry JP I disagree on sexing rbps.I can tell the difference in mature rbps DON'T get me wrong I know its not 100% accurate there's always the exception to the rule but its very close!its all in the belly!

I have 2 prs that have been spawning last 2 day well I got several videos again this time very close bout a ft away. Let me review them I know I got some footage that will show you the differences in male n female(other than the tubes).I know tubes are accurate way to tell but they only show right before spawning.if you have 3 females or 4 males you'll never see any cents or tubes.I pieced together my 3pairs no problen.idk maybe I watch rbps to much?or maybe just enough? JP do your rbp spawn? if someone had a couple caribes to sell 6"+ I'd match em up with some rbps n see what happens!

the key word is not 100% accurate which means you are still playing a guessing game.
you can look at a rbp with bigger belly and think it's female carrying eggs but the only way to know for sure is either watch it lay eggs or cut it open.
when you have a breeding pair, you know what to look for and in general the female will be thicker than male due to the eggs they have to carry but you can't be certain unless it's paired up and/or during breeding, otherwise it could just be a fat male with gut loads of fat.
even if you could pick out a female rbp and get it to lay eggs, you will still need to somehow trigger the caribe to fertilize those eggs (assume the eggs will be fertilized and hatch) which is quite difficult to achieve other wise we'll be breeding caribes left and right.

I've had rbps bred before but unfortunately i was not home when the breeding took place so I missed all the actions. if you get to watch the whole breeding process then I would guess you could see the tubs female use to lay eggs, again I wasn't there to watch mine bred and they were poisoned before they could bred again.

I agree lol. I don't just look at the fatness actually that isn't what I look for at all its rounder not bigger or plumper its rounder at bottom from where head/neck meets belly. I totally agree it is basically a guessing game, n fat males, everything your saying.I couldn't agree more! Females are generally thicker like you said.but even a female with no eggs her belly still is shaped different on the bottom.lol sorry guys ill keep my sexing rbps to myself.

maybe, I missed the chance of figuring out which my rbp was the female few years back.
when I had my last shoal, they all look like female after a big feeding. :D
I think this was taken after a feeding? it's taken a while ago, can't remember for sure.

Man poisoned! That suks! Sorry to hear that!I've seen mine spawn MANY times. Its awesome to watch, very much like my oscars but much nicer!my oscars get pretty mean (like a old couple)!

yea poisoned, left in the morning with them all swimming happen and came home all 7 went belly up. couldn't figure out what happened until later that day I found out we had a terminator came in to spray the entire house for bugs... :( and my room was in the basement so my room probably got a good dose

Its best before feeding n straight profile look. But look how one on right bottom of his belly is flatter than one on left hers dips down more but angles are not perfect n aren't those caribes? Their both pygros but I'm not sure if it will work with them.I haven't clocked in countless hours tending n watching caribes like I have rbps over the years but I'm pretty sure their body shapes almost the same so I'd bet its same. If a fish is sterile would that lessn his drive to reproduce?maybe its chemicals making caribes sterile?during shipping? I know tons of oscars are sterile from chemicals.guess I got luck there too.
