Hybrid Red Belly Piranha?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wonder if it is because the RBP was the female? I have never had any Piranhas breed but what if the hardest part of breeding caribes is getting them to lay the eggs, if the RBP layed them and a male caribe came by wouldn't that work. Not saying that's 100% what happened but it is a theory.

What if tank was split?rbp on one side, caribe on other side? Broadcast fertilazation? Wouldn't get near the same results as direct fertilization.

it's difficult enough to have caribe breed with caribe in captivity let alone caribe with an other pygo species.
there are some rbps with black humeral spots but that doesn't mean it's caribe/rbp hybrid.
is it possible? I wouldn't rule that out but most likely it could just be a sells pitch, they can say whatever they want.
the only way of confirming would be doing DNA test, I don't think anyone wanna spend that kind of resource on a fish.
i agree.

my fish are caribe crossed with nattereri. i will post some pictures asap would be nice if youcould too as i only have my lfs information to go on. but looking at myfish i kinda beleive them

i call BS until i see pics even then i still won't believe you.

there has not been enough (read: ANY) genetic studies to even confirm whether hybridization between these species (or any pygocentrus species) is possible.

there are red bellies that develop slight humeral spots like caribes but these are still not hybrids the givaway is still the shape of the head (less bulldog like than most caribes) and the colour of the eyes (red, cariba's eyes are always clear)

Has anyone heard of a Hybrid Red Belly?

I was in one of my LFS this afternoon and was shown some Hybrids...

He said the Father was a Caribe and mother was a Red Belly? Anyone ever heard of this? Chime in....
i have to see this!!!!

What about manually spawning? I've seen it done on trout, salmon, ect.I'm sure it would work with large tropical fish also. In the right hands of course. Lol

Pics! Pics won't show enough detail.n with the variations of rbp I don't think pics will reveal anything anyhow.I still would like to see em though.
