Hydor Koralia powerheads

Oscars are a messy fish, for sure
I think you could go smaller on the korellia's and vacuum the bottom weekly, or more often...
Thing about sand is, it will move with too strong of current, sometimes before the crud that sits on top of it...that, and it shows more debris that gravel that lets the stuff settle in the nooks and crannys...
I got a fine mesh, skimmer net, to "sweep" the bottom with, manually.
It helps keep the sand looking fresh...;)

I put mine on a timer and aim it at a dead spot and turn it on twice a day for a hour each. Keeps my tank nice and clean

Hmm, I missed the sand part. I run bare bottoms on all tanks for this reason. You could maybe raise the intakes on the FX5's or aim your powerheads to the front glass so the flow runs down the front, over the sand and to the back of the tank where the intakes are. Flow still ending up in the intakes but not directly aimed at the substrate.

I'm not a real big fan of barebottoms and the reason I have sand right now is for my loachs and when I move them I'm going to be getting some polys so thats why I was wanting to keep the sand. If I directed it at the front glass would you still suggest the #4's or go smaller?

I vac my sand once a week when I do my water change and cold net out the poo but right now I feed my loachs sinking vegge waffers and onces they disolve there really messy and I don't really even see it on the sand until they stir it up. That and theres a lot that settles under the caves.

Its almost sounding like I'm either going to have to go with gravel or go barebottom so I can blow the hell out of the bottom with powerheads because one thing i can not stand is seeing debris floating around the tank. Anyone no if gravel would be a bad idea with polys?

It could be the food I'm feeding to because I feed my Oscar mainly pellets and i never see then on the sand anything coming out of his mouth goes straight in the filter. Really only debris I see is the vegge pellets and other sinking pellets I use and some oscar poo but thats big as hell in my 75 I have a terror and his poop is on the sand to but thats about it. I also feed bloodworms and shrimp and havent seen them on the ground. I may wait until I make the swap and when I start getting new fish see what the bottom looks like and go from there.

I'm pretty sure if you get pea sized smooth gravel, polys will be fine with it.I plan on getting some soon, polys, and I am putting them in a gravel tank. I have the same issues with sand you are.I no longer have any sand tanks because I could not keep it clean, and it ends up in your filter.I also am not a huge fan of bare bottom tanks.

Thanks I just made a thread in the poly section asking about different substrates. I've got gravel right now setting out in the garage that came with the tank but its not pea size. But if need be I'll buy some but I'm also wanting to get a cat or to so hell I might just end up going barebottom. Ive never really had a barebottom before but from pics I've seen it just doesn't look to appealing especially when its in the living room and its your main show tank. But I do know one thing I'm about fed up with this sand that and it doesn't help that my Oscar thinks its funny to get mouth fulls of sand and go over the the intake and pit it straight in there. I just went and got a long phillps today so I can take the pump off to clean it out cause I'm sure there some sand setting in there. I cleaning it out last week but didn't have a long enough screwdriver to get the pump off.
