The LFS has Hydro gars coming in this week, and I was just curious what kind of gar this was. The distributor claims that they are true gars, and have the same basic shape as a alligator gar, but have a different pattern, shorter nose, and don't get as big. I already looked at this thread, but that didn't really help. I'm thinking maybe a spotted gar??

Get the latin(scientific) name, hydro gar is some common/non scientific name that could be applied to any number of gar look alikes-Anne

Unfortunately all I have to go on is what the distributor calls them. It is from poseiden aquatics in cali, and they are terrible about common names. Half the time the plecos have common names that are completely made up attached to really common L#s. I'll just have to see it when it comes in tomorrow, and see if I want it or not.

Most likely Ctenolucius hujeta. Just picked up one myself and one of the common names for it is hydro gar. Seems to be about the right price also.

Hard to say... when I spoke to the distributor they said it was a true gar... but did not know the latin name. No telling with this distributor though, as they often have poor common names, and often wrong common names. On the list they had it titled "Hydro gar (spotted)"

Just found out from someone else who has ordered through this distributor, they are boulengerella maculata.
