Hydrocynus GOLIATH

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well i don't see waht the big fuss is all about. it's all about relativity right? at 3.5" a 2ft by 1ft tank seems pretty okay. it's like having a 12" pc in a 7ft by 3.5ft. sounds alright to me.

LOL:D actually i normally do, but i think i can get away with this one, and it'll be experimental, so let's just see how eh?

worst case scenario i can't keep him in a 90g and he's imcompatible with my gar comm, and i sell him to a one of my few friends with big goliaths, so i still have a fall-back plan see.:)
How old are you?

No that isn't the worst case scenario. The worst case scenario is the fish getting spooked in your small tank and smashing into the glass killing itself.

EDIT:

saw the post above... once again its not a strict "length" vs the size of the tank with these guys... the get spooked, rocket through the water... and if the tank is too small smashes there face into the glass

lol i feel no need to divulge my age. but if you really must know, i'm 17.

same thing i feel with gars here, with a small tank, it's unlikely that they will be able to gather enough speed to kill itself in the tank(yes, i have seen how fast they accelerate, but i still don't think it's enough), rather than a 3' tank where it has so much space to gather all that speed and when it actually hits the glass, the impact will definatly be much greater.

i'm guessing you can look at it both ways.

with a small tank, the fish has less space to accumuliate speed. however it also means that the fish has less room to "vent" it's freak outs, and is more likely to hit against the walls of the tank.(which i have covered in blue oyama tape, for what it's worth)

however with a large tank, the fish does have more space to actually freak out and swim it off, however unless the tank is huge compared to the fish(lets say 4' to 3.5"), the fish will in all likelyhood smash into the tank wall anyways, and with a greater impact. i could get a 4' done for it, but i can't justify doing it just for a 3" fish as of yet.

that's my reasoning behind why i'm using a smaller tank, it has worked for several friends so i won't say i'm tempting fate. and i'm just trying to say i'm not being a dip**** and stubbornly ignoring everyone's advise. i'm not. it's just that after thinking things through, i decided to see how this goes.

I'm not trying to say that people are wrong for keeping these fish. However, some species would really be better off not being kept in home aquaria. Don't get me wrong, it's a really cool fish and all, and I would get one if I had the means of keeping it. I just feel that it's not quite right to confine a fish that spends its natural life in large African river systems with little restriction on swimming space. Drs. F & S don't even sell them anymore. I believe that when they did, their minimum tank size recommendation was 400g+. Just my .02 though.

It is a nice looking fish though.

LOL, have you realised the world isn't natural anymore?:D

sad though. and yes i actually believe and support your views, but i also believe that majority of the animals we keep wouldn't mind trading freedom for a steady supply of good food, safety in out enclosures(no predators) and relativly well sized tanks.

Just ignore them. :D Enjoy your fish. :D Nice pick up :D I'm still looking for some :(

ive said that already like twice...

I could care less if you said it five times. I thought maybe by reitterating what you said might make him take more stock in your advice. After all I am speaking from real life experience and not from something I read on the internet. Thanks for pointing it out though.:)

I have to agree with you here. Even though I am guilty of owning one as well. These guys can get just as big as RTC but they are open water predators. I would say the minimum tank size to keep one for any extended period of time would be in the 900 gallon range.

haha thanks for the support dude!:D however i don't think there's a point in ignoring them. after all this is a forum so we should be open minded to what others(esp ppl who have more experience) think. however i stand by my decision of using the smaller tank. but i would definatly move it out if something goes wrong.
