Fish don't just disappear. It had to go somewhere. My money's on the eel. I experienced something very similar, a 7 inch Scomb was ripped to pieces by 3 fw Morays (G. Tile). I heard it happen but I'm sure if I hadn't the eels would have eaten it. If this is the first Moray you've ever owned then you don't yet understand their amazing ability to eat prey larger then their head. Doesn't sound like you have properly selected tankmates for a Scomb. If it didn't happen now everyone here would agree it wouldn't be long till the cat would have gotten it. Payara are delicate fish. Tankmates need to be chosen carefully.

this is what i woudlve said too.
no way a 3" RTC could eat a 6" scomb anyways.
either way, most of those fish wouldve outgrown and eaten the scomb eventually.
also, check if he jumped out anywhere.

We searched everywhere around the tank for atleast an hour and found nothing. I would thing that there would be signs of a struggle anywhere like bits of fish or the plants being out of the gravel.

Morays make "friends"?? Morays keep their friends close and food even closer. I have a Dragon that lived just fine with Monos for almost a year. Few weeks ago it ate all 3 of his "friends" of almost a year. They are untrustable, hungry, predators and that's all there is to it...

And as far as the catfish you're renting, good luck rehoming it. I hope it all goes according to plan.

Thanks Ive been feeding him just before night time so he wont eat a fish every night.

that isn't necessarily going to prevent a disaster with fish getting eaten though. either way, you would need to move fish around since they aren't all compatible, especially with morays, which should be in marine conditions

The LFSs will tell you anything to make a sale. That's what they do. They try to sell fish before they kill them by not housing them properly.

A questions you need to go ask your LFS.....

How much of whick kind of salt do they recommend for your "freshwater" (cough
bullshibby cough) Moray?

Why in gods green earth would you listen to a LFS over hobbyists that can actually keep FW Morays alive? We have NO reason to lie to you. They would loose a sale if they told you the secret to keeping FW Morays alive. The secret- put them in the saltwater they NEED for them to reach the end of thier lifespan. Just cause some people keep them alive for a year or 2 or even longer does NOT mean they will reach thier full lifespan. Proven fact they need to end up in marine conditions.

I bet the LFSs love you if you're actually buying this crap. You'll figure it out eventually. I just hope you do before you get bitter towards a hobby that just seems to be an endless money pit cause nothing stays alive. Don't feel bad, most of us started out where you are. It's up to you where you go from here. Take advice or learn the hard way or any combination of the 2.
