Ok I have been doing alot of research on the payara or hydrolycus species over the years, and I have come to a conclusion or just a random and personal thought.. Well ran across some interesting pictures and semms to me that there is eaither more than the 4 species of hydros or there is more varients..
Well my thoughts have come to this, the fish everyone in this hobby seeks out is the Armatus, or so thought armatus. Well i have doubts that these fish are armatus, being that none of these fish have surpassed 24" and I know of several people who have had these for years.. I also believe that the red tail payara (tattuaia) are actually armatus species, because on almost all these fishing sites the big payara they fish for have red tails and the spot behind the gill plate isn't a slit but more like a dot like the tattuaia we have named in captivity..
anyway here are a few pictures I ran accross today that have led me to believe these thouhgts...
#1
Look at the tail how it has that point in the center, like the so called "armatus" we have in captivity. Also look how slinder its body is, over the more broad and deep bodies of the armatus people have..
#2
same fish, agian look how slender the body is...
#3
good picture up close of the jaw structure and head shape. Notice how it is more of a straight angle over a slanted angle like the "tattuaia" species we have in captivity.
#4
agian look at the mark behind the gill plate, it is a slit/line over a dot. Which led me to believe this is an Armatus over tattuaia..
#5
Then look at this fish, there is no point in the center of the tail, like most big fish caught on the web, also look at the red marking of the tail..And also this has a deeper body shape than the previous fish..
#6
A good close up of the same fish, look at the marking behind the gill plte, notice that this is more of a dot over a slit, which makes me think this is a red tail payara or tattuaia..
#7
Bette picture f the overall body shape of the fish I believe to obe tattuaia. Notice the red tail and the spotting behind the gill plate over the slash of an Armatus..
#8
Now look at this ov all fish together, see the biggest at the end has the dotted splotch behind the gill plate over the other, which have noe marking or a slight slach which is present in Armatus species over tattuaia...
#9
Another angle!
Like I said these are just my opinion, If anyone with a little more knowledge than me can chime and and explain what they say..

found these pictures by looking up Peixe cachorro not hydrolycus armatus or tattuaia.
