Thanks for your input.......anymore?

Chris, that is not a snakehead.....remember that!

Sorry for the error in the title, use Texans do not have the evolved vocabularies you northeners do.

in the uk the law covers any animal, as far as im aware, and i know it states they must be properly housed and catered for at all times while under your care.

for example i would call in the RSPCA if someone had freshwater tropical fish in a tank that had no filter, heater or both. its simply neglect of an animal under your care. of course the RSPCA officer is far more likely to get a conviction if it were a fluffy being tortured or badly cared for but in their eyes they are all animals and they would try and get the harshest punishment possible. unfortunately the punishments are not hard enough. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...ection-from-laws-on-animal-rights-527157.html

as for illegal fish, i wouldnt have a clue becuase all banned fish here are coldwater and i know nothing about coldwater fish.

Personally I wouldn't call the cops on someone over fish. I have however in the past on people who have starving dogs chained up in their yards, wallowing in filth or starving horses on pasture devoid of grass. That is just me being biased toward your more "evolved" species I suppose.
IMO Altho it would be horrible for someone to keep a bunch of fish in substandard conditions, slowly killing them, how do you really express that to the average person? Much less ask a probably already overwhelmed police department to expend resources and time on fish. Are there laws stipulating care of teleosts? I don't know how they would go about prosecuting either.

I think that's indicative of one of the problems with this hobby (and this site especially). While a neon tetra certainly isn't an "evolved" species, a two foot dovii that lives for 20 years and has a better personality than any horse or cow I've been around is definitely a very different animal.

We have lots of people (on this site and elsewhere) that consider fish somehow beneath their need for concern.

As I've said before, 90% (heck....closer to 100%!) of fish sold at stores will be dead in a few months. They are sold to completely ignorant buyers from salespeople and businesses that accept ZERO responsibility for them. If the same thing occurred with puppies or kittens there'd be a Congressional hearing!

Until i read that i was not aware at all that fish in this country were covered by those laws! And i'd guess that not many are aware of them either as i do still here and see of fish being kept in completely inappropriate conditions. Another UKer on here mentioned if i remember right in one thread he had a friend with an RTC and a tsn both over 2 foot in length in a 6x2x2 and wouldn't rehome them. I remember thinking i wish there was something the law could have done about that but didn't think there was. Now i know different. If it was someone i knew, i still don't know whether i could call the authorities on them. I'd probably make them aware of the problem and consequences and hope they made the right choice.

If I havent called the cops on how Petco and Petsmart keep their fish, I dont think id call on a buddy (now putting him up on game or giving/borrowing some stuff so I feel better is a diff story).

If worst came to worst, id pop out the "Benjis" and relocate the fish :)

What I am saying the fish are not being killed, just overcrowded, by that particular person's standards. No dead fish evident.

To add to it, if you went there to buy a a fish and trade another fish. Would you leave your fish there as a a trade, take the new fish, and THEN call the authorities?

Just rhetorical..........I mean hypothetical

Perfect example SatansGoldfish!

Fish like that need a few thousand gallons just not to be stressed, much less to thrive. There are a handful of cute little RTCs at my LFS right now. Maybe one person a YEAR walks into that store ready for such a fish.

True. I shudder at the condition of the big box stores aquarium section. Although, I have a friend who works for a large aqaurium distributor and all he says is,"We throw away pounds (POUNDS) of fish everyday." Unquote.

I have to be honest, my Petsmart is pretty well run. They're definitely a better operation than most of the LFSs.

They sell a lot of F0 cichlids there?
