I am planning on getting a 55 gallon when i move out of res after this term. i was thinking a more openly aquascaped with a fairly deep sandbed
Probably going to have around 40-50 lbs of liverock
I am going to Build my own sump and refugium, which will have wet/dry filter, protein skimmer and perferably some marco algea

6-8 blue/green chormis
5 firefish
4 zebra barred dartfish
2 Heniochus Black & White Butterflyfish
1 Coral Beauty
1 Jawfish
1 or 2 Sleeper Gold Head Goby
1 Spotted Mandarin
2 neon gobys
maybe 3 or 4 flasher wrasse (if i can get my hands on some)

and a clean up crew
20-30 hermit crabs
2-4 emerald crabs
10-15 snails
and maybe an urchin
2 Scarlet Cleaner shrimp
4-5 camel shrimp

is this over stocked? all the fish stay under or around 6' exept the slepper goby. im just trying to get all the info i can so when i move out i can get right into it w/o screwing it up..

will the butterflys eat mushrooms? ive read that they will eat soft corals and at other places ive read they eat all corals. and i would like to if i can keep mushrooms and polyps in this tank

Edit: The flow rate to and from sump will be approx 300gph so all water will be filtered 5 1/2ish time a hour

i hope those fish weren't X and X and X and X... that'd be HORRIFICALLY OVER STOCKED..

in a 55 the chromis wont school as much, but they'd fight more in a smaller tank (for a school of them a 55 isn't all that big)
same with the firefish, same but less agression from the bar gobies, the dartfish do better in pairs or trios anyway IME

ditch the heniochus and stick to 1 or a mated pair of the wrasses..

and then you should be good

fish that "will" school do not if the tank is too small

so nothing will really school is a 55.. damn, i really want to keep a pair of butterflys (or a lionfish but a peaceful tank was more appealing to me) is that possible in a 55? i can't afford a bigger set up then that

you could but they'd be more or less the only 2 fish in there..

unless you could upgrade in 2-3 years

alright i think ill stick with the peacful set up and have flasher wrasse insted of butterflys (could i have just one butterfly?). i've read that flashers do better with 1 male and 2 or 3 females (is this only in larger aquariums?)

would it be possible to keep a dwarf lion (zebra or fuzzy) would it be possible to keep a Radiata), snowflake eel and a toby puffer of some sort

the eel's a bit of a strech but with great filtration it can be done

once butterfly would work. also with great filtration..

I would avoid multiple firefish /chromis, they will kill each other ending up with only one alive. The zebra darts are a good schooling fish, another option would be long spine cardinals ( apogon leptacanthus ) but those are rather hard to come by. A warning about jaw fishes, you may never see it again, as they don't really come out of their den often.

firefish an chromis will fight? they don't even really occupy the same area of the reef do they?.... and multiple firefish is a bad idea? (i have no experience with either)

if i go pred would a niger trigger go with toby and lionfish

the sump is going to be a 10-15 gallon with wet dry, activated carbon, protein skimmer and refugium
