haha its not that i want to go against you Bigourami, i just want a nice clean sandbed and i like the diea that they won't get all their food from me and will still hunt they way they would in the wild...

Many Thanks to everyone who helped me with this i will definetly post pics when i start up this tank

would a 65 gallon wide be big enough of a butterfly? maybe a long nose, or a Black and White Heniochus Butterfly Fish

i would think so

36''x18''x24''?
yeah

personally, i would go with either a pyramid butterfly (or zoster's), big longnose (there is a difference) or schooling heniochus (again, there's a diffference)

then you could also have it as a reef tank

butterfly fish will like a larger tank better. I have a copper band in a 120 and as active as he is, i would dream of putting him in the 65 i used to have as a reef. Id bet you would be okay with one in a 65 but just keep that in mind.

i would say yes.. but people will always have personal opinions on tank sizes.. it brings up the un-answerable question of the ethics of keeping any animal in captivity

Realistically Butterflies, Tangs, Angels etc are fish that need room to swim. So confining a fish that loves to swim lets say in the wild they keep to 40 feet radius and stick them into a box that is only 3' would be killer. Consider that maybe some of these are Tank bred. They are used to a more confined space. They still have an instinct to want to swim. Maybe you'll have luck with a small one but as it gets larger it wouldn't be fair.

again...
the ethics of keeping animals in captivity..

why would i keep my 2 inch damsel in a 30 gallon tank when in the wile he'd have an 8'x8' stretch of territory?

reasonable accomidations can be made
