fugupuff;1548853; said:actually, without any buffer in the tank, the ph would drop within a few days without a water change.
once water is changed, whether its 25% more or less, if the ph of the new water is high, it will alter the tank ph immediately. often with softwater fish, this in itself triggers breeding/mating. also the change in temperature.
but its a double edged sword, as when the ph drops from the lack of water change is different than the natural low ph found in soft water systems with tannin and dark water. also the lack of water change would accumulate other toxins, from nitrite to nitrate. high nitrate levels compromise the healthy, especially for eslasmobranchs.
just like people who try to breed heckle discus, they need low ph to do well, but once the eggs are layed, they can't hatch in a low ph environment. its harder to duplicate nature in a small tank.
lets say, hystrix is one that needs lower ph., probably would breed if the water has a lower ph, but from a soft water source, and acidified with plant leaves and peat instead of the accumulation of fish waste. the higher the ph, the higher concentration of "ammonia" the more toxic it is to the fish.
that is why, old schoool fish keepers advised on not changing water, there's some truth to it...

But now im gonna try with a bigger tank and 1.3 Hystrix..But i really miss my 1.1.. ( R.I.P.)
Kind regards Anders.
