I almost hurled!

I was cleaning out my convict breeding tank a few days back. I sucked on the gravel vac to get the siphon effect started. Well I didn't suck it hard enough (man, this is starting to sound dirty). The siphon bubbled a bit then stopped. I failed to notice a collection of brown water trapped in the lower part of the hose. Then I sucked again, much harder then last time.

I spent the next 10 minuets hacking and coughing brown water out of my lungs. I'm glad the bucket was beside me cause I almost lost my supper.

Lesson learned:
If you fail to start a gravel vac in your first try, empty out the water before sucking on the hose again.

Well you are not alone. I have tasted some nasty water a few times before sucking from the end of a Python (there really was not a way to say that without sounding dirty lol).

I don't get why everyone is sucking on the gravel vac tubes. Just fill the tube up and put the actual gravel vac part under water and put the other end in the bucket....syphon starts and no sucking.

I can do that (now with alot of practice) with my 90 (most of the time) but with smaller tanks its not possible cause the gravel cleaning part of the siphon is longer then the tank itself.

Thus I resort to sucking and vary rarely get a mouth full of water and almost waste my supper. lol

some times i just put a powerhead on the end in the tank and it does the work for me XD

This has never happened to me, but that's only because I get my husband to do the siphoning.

As far as why this is necessary, I don't use a bucket on my sorority tank...it's too small, plus its on the kitchen counter and the hose goes right into the sink.
