I am crazy? or you did the same

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
guess i gotta say it lol
to much w/c
only need to do it every 2 weeks give or take "normal stocking" "light feeding"
:)

did you see the thread with a poll on this subject?
i can try to find it if you didnt see it
;)

but in the end, every tank/setup/fish is different and has different needs
:)

Well, I don't actually practice what I preach in that respect neccessarily :p I'm suggesting it to him as a means to conserve the next oil: water, because I am an environmentalist and think what he is doing is wasteful and unneccessary. Veiled agenda, yes, but also good fishkeeping. Also, while 50% 3x weekly might not be bad for the fish at all, it may not be any better for them than 50% 1x a week.

My tanks fluctuate with stocking too often for me to ever be able to have a fixed pattern. I breed a lot of different species and do my maintenance to suit the situation. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I knew I was doing more water changes than I needed to for optimal fish health and thus contributing to the demise of our planet. Granted, one might say that if I feel that way I should get out of the fish hobby period, but I justify it by breeding some species that are endangered or extinct in the wild :p.

Discus wouldn't be a good basis for comparison either, since the average hobbyist isn't keeping discus because of their delicate nature. Also conditioning for breeding is good for your fish but it is also designed to maximize yield and induce spawning behavior. For many fish abundance of certain types of food and rain / flood water is a spawning trigger and so conditioning for spawning is also simply providing the conditions under which the fish is known to spawn.

I'm not saying any of this to be argumentative, it's again, just an attempt to conserve precious water while also looking out for the health of the fish.

i was doing 50% 4x a week now im at about once maybe twice... i need to go with a automatic setup

I don't understand why people are so concerned with water conservation..... RENEWABLE RESOURCE. I suppose I live in a place where water is quite abundant(5 of the largest lakes in the world, the Great Lakes), so I am much less concerned than others, but just because we're using it doesn't mean its leaving us. It is redistributed as ground water and returns to lakes, rivers, and the ocean. If it goes into the atmosphere, its gonna come back, its not like its goin out into space, gone forever. I suppose if you live in a place where all water that goes down the drain passes through a water treatment plant, but I have a well where I live, and changed water goes on the lawn to prevent the septic system from getting full, and new water comes from a 150-foot deep well. Its just another means of circulation!:)

The fact is, everyone has different aquaria, and thus, different water changing habits and opinions. That's the beauty of the hobby!:D

I practice the same thing. I do about 50-60% water changes twice a week or every 3-4 days. My 100 gallon tank is overstock with 14 fishes total with length ranging anywhere from 3-7." I also have dats and have noticed that feeding twice a day coupled with twice a week water changes does make them grow a little bit faster compared to when I was doing once a day feeding and 50-60% weekly water changes.

There's also the fact that I have a sensitive fish that needs pristine water.

Most important thing is water changes in keeping fish..so keep doing what your doing and you will always have success at keeping happy healthy fish.

I don't think there is anything wrong with being cautious and doing frequent water changes. It is important for the fish. I rather do what one may consider too many water changes than too little. If my tanks are not crystal clear it bothers me lol. I am forever doing water changes. I write down a little schedule which tanks i did last and who is next. So i pretty much change water on a tank everyday, i have a total of 11 tanks now. And then every weekend its a massive water change on all the tanks. :)
