aptaisia is one of the worst kinds of annoying things reefers have to deal with. do a little reading on it and you will see what your in for. i have been battling it for 3 months, i bought 124 lbs of live rock for $2 per lb because it was covered with aptaisia. i currently have a pakistan, pearlscale, and a saddleback butterfly taking care of mine for me. i tried injecting them which is difficult as hell only works about 1 out of 4 times and you can only do a few each time or you will have too many dying in your tank at once and have a spike in your levels.
I thought peppermint shrimp were pretty reliable about eating aptaisia as well?

it is very likely that they will eat the little feather duster lookin worms along with the aptaisia but you dont have too much of a choice, you could try going with the nudibranch and get like 3-4 of them you just have to hope your clowns dont make a meal out of them. they would eat the aptaisia and leave the worms.

peppermint shrimp are decent at controling aptaisia but they dont eat the larger ones, they will only eat the babies. which means they will control it spread but they wont kill the entire population.

peppermint shrimp or butterflies dont eat aptasia....

The chances of them acutally doing it for you would be 10% chance. You have to qt them and starve them and feed them nothing but aptaisa. If i was you i would kill the live rock and recycle it. I told you shortcuts will cost you money. You don't have a large enough tank for a butterfly and shouldn't buy any fish. You should have bought live rock form a reputable seller that would refund your money if you found aptasia. Also they could give you good info about controling aptasia, not another sales person telling you a fish would rather eat stinging anenomies than fish food.....

Kill the live rock and recycle.

Don't buy any fish other than your two clowns. You keep talking about adding more fish, you have a 20 gallon man. You NEED to keep that in mind. You say your on a budget but want to spend all this cash on fish.... I mean 40 gallon breeders are like 30$ at petco ..... It sounds like your just going to overstock this tank and kill everything, then just quit. You will waste more money than you "saved".

i have had a 100% success rate with 4 butterflys that all eat the aptaisia along with pellets, they eat the pellets when fed twice daily and the pick at the aptaisia all day long and are decemating the population in a hurry.

i only recommended a butterfly for him in his 20 because a 1" butterfly that has a max size of 6" takes a while to grow to 3" and knowing sbuse's track record for freshwater i know he would do what it takes to upgrade his tank to accommodate the growing fish, otherwise i would have never recommended a fish that gets 6" for a 20 gallon tank.

You are very lucky. I watched copperband and all types of butterflies go all day at my lfs, and people bring that back dissapointed. The LFS started to train the butterflies and began doubling the price saying bred to eat aptasia. Trust me it is very rare your fish will "eat" aptasia. They can pick all they want but aptsia can take some serious damage no problem, removing them is another story.

I dont know his track record, and he seems just to jumpy to order a fish or more than he needs. 2 clowns do require a 30 gallon. If you really plan on upgrading then go for it, i know nothing of you. So my comments may not be as "nice" because you are new, and most new people kill a lot of fish and you cant really "save" money by buying cheap products in saltwater. spend decent money and get some good deals, but always make sure you get quality things. Saltwater is an investment, its not like FW.

thanx for the compliment on my fish care...as i was looking them up i saw that most have a 50gal+ min tank and i was actualy thinking that they could do the task in this tank and then be transfured to my next tank i will be doing witch is a moray tank...by the looks of their body shape they would be difficult to be eatten...

yes i understand that i am new to salt and you have not incountered me much except with my moray tank thoughts...thats why i have not said anything about some of the "not nice" comments, due to the fact that i have seen to many people by a RTC for their 125gal and say it is fine...i go at those people similar to how you have been tward me...not outright rude, but more "strickly informing" for the fishes benifit...

alittle me background i have a better part of 19yrs keeping fish by myself since 5yrs old...i look at every tank as an investment weather it be fresh or salt...if i buy any fish i resarch it first and make the proper arangments for said fish...i have over 300+ gals of fresh and i have parts in the garage to buld 4-8 600gal+ ponds...every time i say "save money" and "the cheapest way" is just me saying i need the most bang for my buck as i hate to get garbage and watse my money, yet i don't want to spend way to much...any fish that i have seen that i can't house do to plans changing i rehome to someone that can properly do so and that they already have the system need to care for said fish(not that that happens often)...also look at my tank setup and see my stocklist...i keep trout and white bass witch are fish that most cant keep for one reason or another...

as for the aptaisa i only have 4 stalks could i just pick or cut them off and soulve my problem? like with the bubble algea?

also something i have noticed on here is that there is way to many kids...the type i am talking about are the ones that are waiting for mommy and daddy to get the stuff for them and not responcible adults that can do what it takes like us... witch could also explain the type of replies i have been getting...i do seem jumpy to get fish, but i will do it with the fish in mind like i always do...i am also jumpy cause i hate looking at an "empty tank" the rock, starfish and snails in the tank now are helping me cope till i get the fish...witch from the stage of cycle looks to be firday or monday

DO NOT CUT OR PICK APTAISIA!!! aptaisia reproduces by letting go of wherever it is hanging onto and floating to a new place in the tank it leaves behind a tiny piece of itself where it was previously and a new one starts growing there. if you cut them in half you are looking at releasing dozens of tiny pieces into your tank which will all latch on somewhere and start to grow and all of a suddon you have hundreds in your tiny little tank. like i said before if your not careful and take immediate action they will take over your tank.
