I am learning to breed betta firsthand!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All but the smallest and weakest of a betta spawn can tackle newly hatched bbs from day one.I use egg yolk infusion first day I see swimmers and immediatly start the bbs hatching. Most important is to keep the tank well covered as drafts can be very bad for the fry.

I plan on starting my brine shrimpery after the babies are out of the eggs. by the time they are swimming horizontal the brine shrimp will have hatched. i also plan on covering the tank. I have a question fo anyone who has bred them before, should i cover the whole top of the tank or just the part where the light doesnt cover?

BUMP for previous Q and confirmation of breeding info.

decided to spend a few bucks and get a glass lid for their tank. I am keeping a close eye on them. Can anyone tell me how long until the parents will be able to breed again. or any other recommendations?

- If the female wasn't beat up that bad then about in 2 weeks they should be able to breed agian.

- To answer your other question no a crowntail is not a mouthbrooder betta examples are like macs and chinnodes.

- I would recommend you use BBS all the way until they are old enough to eat blood worms and chop up blackworms. I tried using the other stuff with very litte survial rate. They will eat BBS after they lose there yolk sac.

java moss helps with microscopic foods and i use crushed hikari cichlid pellets for my larger juvies higher growth rate and better fin color.

I personally have the hikari first bites and i have plan on hatching brine shrimp when i see that they are coming out of the eggs.

When I started with Bettas I was not sure what I was doing. The first month it lived in a brandy sniffer! After a while I got a tiny betta tank and then got a 5.5 gal and tossed him in there. I was always curious where all the tiny bubbles came from. I found out the male was ready to mate! So I ran out and got a female. I did NOT know he would eat the babies! so I left him in there! (MISTAKE) After the mating the female secludes to the bottom pretty much motionless. (that's how you know it's done)

Yeah you have to remove the female after she stops giving eggs so she doesnt eat the eggs and so he doesnt kill her.
