I am losing my Big Old Common

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hmm...good question.

Not really sure what their lifespan is supposed to be, nor if it varies between fancy and common plecos.

What are you feeding it? I know I've read on MFK that common plecos like a meatier type food as they mature/grow old/etc. Maybe it just needs a lil variety to get it feeding again.

/shrug, goodluck!

Good question. I would imagine around 12 yrs like most fish that size. My brother's got 2 that are 9 yrs old, that's the oldest I've known of.
Hope he gets back to normal, Liz.

The lifespan of common plecos is not known, but it is believed to be around 20 to 30 years in fish tanks. Plecos are an omnivorous species, but meaty food should only make up a small part of its diet. For small plecos, uneaten scraps of the meaty food you serve to other fish in the tank will should be enough. Large plecos can be given shrimps and fish fillets every once in a while. What size tank is he in and i hope this helps.

Do you feed him zuchinni?
Its the main course for my big plecos.
My biggest will eat and eat and eat.
Keeps her busy all night.
hope your comes around.Good luck!

He is in a 125gal with 2 severums and one clown knife... he ate until the other day... zuchnini , cooked shrimp.. pellets both african cichlid and massivore by hikari... and occasional silverside and krill .. every one in the tank is fine.. and eating.. water test is perfect.. but i offered him his favorite shrimp tonight and no good.. moved away.. does not hide anymore just lays there out in the open.. is it possible clown knife zapped him.. ??

I remember asking the samething a long time ago. Someone replied saying that he had one for 11 years and still kicking...or sucking. I'm guessing 15+ years.

Liz you should make a post about this in the disease forums. I read there that loss of appetite can sometimes be attributed to an internal parasite, but that may be jumping to conclusions.

there is one at my lfs that is over ten years old, i hear they can live into their twenties
