Hi, I am sorry your Pleco didn't make it. To answer your question a Common would reach 12" in it's first year (some don't grow for some reason but most Commons (if they are Pterygoplichthys)) grow at 1" a month until they reach 12" and then grow more slowly). Their potential lifespan is 25 years in an aquarium but very few reach that age due to tank "disasters" e.g. heater failure, disease etc. By the way I think yours was Pterygloplichthys Disjunctivus. Here is a link

Thanks Anna ... i think you are absolutely correct on his ID, i always knew he had an extra special underside pattern.. i appreciate your info... so yes he was at least a foot and he could have been very old... fish fish and more fish and turtles 117.JPG

I'm so sorry, Liz :-( I sure don't see a thing wrong with him and I know you took very good care of him. I'm at a loss as to what it could be, too.
i appreciate your kind words.. old age ... has to be,.

My husband reminded me the last time I lost a fish (it was a penguin tetra) that sometimes, fish just die. It's crazy, because we're so careful about how we keep them, and there's usually some onset of symptoms, and I know I spend time looking at my fish every day, just making sure there's nothing going on. After I found the tetra, I tested, and nothing was amiss, but did a water change anyway, and then watched that tank obsessively for like a week! But, people die without warning also, and if we didn't have autopsies, we'd likely never know why. The best we can do is keep our fishes the best we can, and make sure that their lives are good, and that they have everything they need, and I'm sure you've done all of that for this guy. He was a beautiful, beast-y pleco. I'm sorry for your loss.

Anna thats a P. disjunctivus no doubt... wow Liz... im really sorry for you :( what a great looking fish... but, if you bought him when he was 12", then it was probably old age. it seems like once he neared his death, he kinda went off his food, and just hung around until he went peacefully... again, sorry for your loss.
