there is one at my lfs that is over ten years old, i hear they can live into their twenties
you know the problem is he could be very old.. i got him when he was over a foot long.. so who knows how old it took for him to get that big then i got him about 5 or 6 years ago.... i wonder if old age would just hit him this quickly though.. up until the other day he was active..

hey liz, sorry i can't help out with your pleco , but you have id this leco as a common , you have answered one of my many questions, sometimes i see plecos just under a foot long traded in at the lfs and they sometimes have that deep black color. i have always wondered if these were commons.

So i thank you so very much liz

My opinion is that he could just be a liitle sick, when the lfs here gets traded in big commons they stick them in a 90 with four oscars, overstocked yes but big fish sale slowly, oscars are fully grown, and that tank stays above 80f maxing out at 84f , they eat those oscar pellets from hikari, basic homemade flakes and spirulina flakes, what i find remarkable about this lfs is that there large fish in this 90 are so active, and one of the oscars that came in with hith is healing up and the oscars have also startecd to breed.

I recomend getting spirulina .

maybe a change of diet.. or maybe its seek a mate?

I also find potatos to do amazing things to plecos.. should try that... but maybe just maybe its seeking for a mate.. who knows..

But sexing them is hard.. :(

Sorry to hear Liz!

thanks everyone.. i keep telling myself old age..since i have no idea how old he was..

I'm so sorry, Liz :-( I sure don't see a thing wrong with him and I know you took very good care of him. I'm at a loss as to what it could be, too.

Hi, I am sorry your Pleco didn't make it. To answer your question a Common would reach 12" in it's first year (some don't grow for some reason but most Commons (if they are Pterygoplichthys)) grow at 1" a month until they reach 12" and then grow more slowly). Their potential lifespan is 25 years in an aquarium but very few reach that age due to tank "disasters" e.g. heater failure, disease etc. By the way I think yours was Pterygloplichthys Disjunctivus.
