I am not a monster fishkeeper anymore

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im with you man. I did the same thing recently in my 265. Got rid of all the big fish and have started with what I really wanted at about 2-3 inches. Grammodes, argentea, HRPs, cyanos & trimac. Tank looks empty as hell, but its cooler watching them with tons of room to chase and play. Ill ad some Istlanums after Christmas, then grow them all out and see out of the group who can live with each other.

Pretty much my plan

growin em out is always really cool. i got a 4 inch jag now who was about a 1/2 inch when i got it. its really starting to show color now and put on size. cant wait till it gets to monster size.

monsterfishkeepers isnt really about keeping big fish. its about your desire and drive to excel as the best fishkeeper you can possibly be. i missed oscars too, and got rid of all my africans to return back to the SA/CA's that i really missed. their personalities just cant be beat.

Hi everyone, I just joined the site and this is my first post. I am new to keeping large fish. Been running a 100gal with about 30+ cichlids ( mostly malawi, and a couple Vic's). We set up a 125 and decided to go with larger fish. We have 1 6in Escondido, 1 Male Venustus 6", 10" Male Bumble Bee, 5" Blue Ahli, and just aquired an ebjd who is under 1" and living with some fry in a 10gal, until he can get big enough to hang in the 100 gal then move to the 125. Also got a 3" Blue Acara who is currently growing out in the 100gal.
We've had our 100 gallon for a couple years, and I have really enjoyed the malawis but since we got our Escon, I have been just fallen in love with her, and began doing research on other types of fish like her, which lead me to the Blue Acara ( different yet similarly cool). Ebjd, well, they are just outstanding - just hope he lives! But have said all of that to say I feel kind of like a "bad fish parent", because I find myself thinking of clearing out my 100 to aquire more CA/SA... After reading this thread I'm feeling alittle better about it. But we will see what happens, gotta discuss it with the Mister. I just appreciate the reminder that its about enjoyment above all else.

Thanks!

I don't know what the "Mission Statement" of MFK is, but there seems to me that there are a lot of different aspects to fishkeeping.
Collecting rare fish, and owning large tanks with frightening creatures is a blast. So is breeding thousands of fry and growing them out. So is raising a tankful of cichlids from 1" to monster size, or catching wild fish and domesticating them. I do all of those things, and have never thought that there was any aspect of the hobby that was necessarily less "authentic" than any other. I think if you spend enough years in this you meet enough people who turn you on to something you never did, and it catches your fancy.
For example: I have kept fish for 30 years, and I have never had a SW tank. That means that I may yet become a reef tank nut, who knows? It certainly is possible.

The fun to me is the fact that in trying to learn more about my fish, over the years I have learned a whole lot, and made friends with a lot of really cool people.

I saw a post not too long ago of a guy in New Zealand who keeps the biggest, ugliest eels I have ever seen, and loves them! To me, they would be dinner, but to him they are really cool. That is one of the reasons I love MFK, because there is always a new way to skin a catfish.

I had a choice a few weeks ago. Buy a large Jack Dempsey and Senegal, or buy them as juvies and grow them out. I felt I would enjoy growing them out more, so I got an EBJD and will be getting senegals and severum :D

Best of luck to you!

wow this makes alot of sense man im about to finish setting up my 360 gallon and ive been collecting and looking for big fish only ,and spending mad cash i mean i love the variety im throwing in there but im taking a risk with all these fish if it gets bad in there im going this route man ,just grow everything out so in the long run they most likely will all get along but im with anybody that grows out fish or likes to collect rare big fish to ,good thread man makes lots of sense i cant turn back now all the big fish are ready to go in the tank this week, well good luck erybody and a happy new year:headbang2:nilly:
