I am sick and tired of this Brown Algae. Help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It has been a few months and I must say nothing has worked. I tried chemipure and it seemed to work for a few days(maybe placebo) but now the brown algae is back in both of my tanks. So it is definitely an issue with my water. Nitrates stay below 20ppm at all times.

When I lived in Houston I could have nitrates at 80ppm and had zero brown algae. Now that I live in Dallas the water here must be bad for my tanks.

I am at a loss of what to do.

Might have to just wipe the walls down when you do water changes. It will add about 10 minutes to your water changes; it will come back a little bit by next WC but won't be a carpet or anything. If it comes back that fast, maybe do 2 WC's a week and wipe. If you tried all those suggestions and it didn't work, it is probably excess silicates in your tapwater or something else out of your control

I had a sand type substrate do this very thing to me back in the 90's. tried a ton of different things for about 6 months if I remember. once I took it out as my last resort and went bare bottom, never seen it ever again. the vortex diatom powder can cause silica blooms also I found. I still use mine, but now when I charge it with the powder and its ready I throw a small dose of seachem prime in and let it run for bout 15mins in the charging pail before I throw the filter in the tank.
