Healthy swordtails should work.I have kept swordtails with large veija on numerous occasions without issue.

Could it be that op's zonatus are on the smaller side and viewed them differently than larger vieja would have ?

Maybe but I have grown them from fry to 12" plus with swordtails and never had an issue.

Have you tested your water to check all is well.
Often fish will change behaviour and hide if something has spiked in water parameters.
