this is what i don't understand, people who drop money on college and don't have a long term plan centered around their education. why do people do that?!?!?!

I agree here too.....

I started college with no idea what I wanted to do, so I dropped out and went to work so I could figure it out.

It turns out that the experience I gained in those four years I would've spent in college was much more valuable "to me" than college would've been. Plus, I was making money during that time instead of spending it.

When I was younger, I had it set in my mind that I wasn't going to be a slave to the man. I was only going to work a job doing something I loved.

Well, I have done all three of my "dream jobs" and they all sucked after a while. It was fun at first, but when something you enjoy doing becomes something you are required to do all day - every day to pay your bills, it's not so fun anymore.
.

i did not know you were an adult film star!

haha That was a crazy summer.

it's not this simple really. at 18, 19 years old, you may not know what you wanna do yet. you may choose something and commit to it, finish school, and find out you want something else after 5+ years in that field. it's not out of the norm that people make career changes in their 30's

if i can go back, i would not be in this field either that i'm in now. i am lucky though because right now i'm debating if i should go back to school because my wife will soon make enough for me to leave my job.

i may end up being a stay at home dad for a few years and take night classes. but a high tuition is really what's stopping me

and to ts, here's my thought

what i've found is that sometimes, you want something and go for it, it satisfies for a while, then you end up wanting something else. i really loved my field at first, but like someone stated, after a while it got old, and i realized i wish i took another route.

but then again, i think back to all that i have acheived and where it got me, i smile. i'm content. but because i want change and because of personal life situations i may have to leave work and i'm wanting to take this opportunity and not waste it so I'm debating to go back to school.

I asked the same questions to my Grandfather. He was a very wise man who grew up poor, struggled through the depression, and worked hard all of his life. He put it to me just like this:
"There are very few people who get paid for what they really enjoy doing...The things that you enjoy doing in life will more than likely cost you money--they are called hobbies... The things that you make yourself do will earn you the money to do what you are passionate about." He also said that "Money cannot and will not buy happiness, but it does make misery more enjoyable."

I work hard at what I do and am good at my job, but it is not my passion. It does however, pay for what I need to survive. I totally agree that you can't put a price tag on the love given to us by family and friends,. Given the choice I would take the love of my family over financial security...

Good topic!!!,

Honestly. Go talk to your dad or anyone who has worked in the "blue collar" or working class industry that is in your (family). Ask for advice and motivation. Anyone who has worked as a hard laborer knows what it is to find it inside you and enjoy what you do. because who knows better to have to keep going for it than a labor intense employee or employer. And if it means searching for a better paying job then so be it. It is all the same. people who work their ass off will lose interest or people with a desk job will lose interest no matter weather its fun or not. look in the mirror in the morning for a week and tell yourself what you see and fix what needs to be fixed. Your an educated man. your fortunate for that.

Some people do go to college with a plan but that does not mean the outside world will agree with it =] People change their minds too. It happens.

As for working a job to work it and make money instead of not finding a job you enjoy - I don't agree with it so much either.. although sometimes you have to. I personally would rather enjoy what I do then make a lot of money. I can't say that my Dad agrees with this one, but both my parents understand that I will never work or last at a job that I hate and they support me and my ambition to do something that I love doing instead of worrying about money (most people I know that worry about money seem to be really stressed out and they have money and they don't even enjoy it all they do is complain about work and money). I don't want to live life always worrying about money and hating my job. I picked the degree I did because it is what I want to do, even though the majority of these jobs don't pay a lot. Your dream job may not always be your dream job either - sometimes you find your dream job somewhere you may not expect to find it at all. You may find something you are content with even if its not your dream job. I have worked jobs I love and jobs that I hate. The ones that I love I stay with as long as I can (I left the last one b/c I moved away). I work the jobs that I hate knowing that they are not my forever job, they are just there - for the moment, to pay my bills. View your current job as a way to get your family by until you find something better, its not your forever job and it doesn't have to be. Look for something you enjoy or something you can go in with a positive mindset and enjoy even if it was not your first choice. Every job will have a down side but you have to learn to enjoy it, make the best of it and have a positive mind set (No job is perfect). You may not find your dream job - but that doesn't mean you can't find a job you won't enjoy. Just keep looking. I don't think its selfish, you worked hard in school and for your degree so you deserve to find a job you want. Not to mention I would think coming home in a good mood from work would make home life better than coming home in a poop mood from work.

Ash, you work at a place that breeds monkeys? sounds interesting, how do you get tired of that?
