Just clarifying, a jd won't get to large for a 55g. Actually a pair of jd could work in one.
Yes it will. A 12 inch fish in a 12 inch wide tank, may work, but it is not a good idea. JD often grow to 12 inches, and a pair in a 55,way too much bio load.

I couldn't do just a single GT, but maybe a GT and a Firemouth, Salvini or Convict

but I'd probably go for a pair of JDs, or an EBJD/JD pair

I agree. JDs are the smallest of those 3. I think a pair would be fine in there
Green Terrors are the smallest.
Oscars grow from 12 to 15 inches on average.
Jack Dempseys grow from 10 to 12 inches on average.
Green Terror grow from 8 to 10 inches on average.

they are unpredictable but if theyre raised small together with other inhabitants they could get al0ng
Very true.I just think in a tank as small as a 55,you could be asking for trouble. But if you buy another fish that is suitable in size to a GT,and buy them both as juvis, you may get long term tank mates. Then again, maybe not.
