I.D. THIS GAR

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
why did you start this thread after the other thread? it is a florida like stated in the other thread.

Looks like a Florida gar to me.

Keep in mind that 99% of the "spotted gars" and "Florida spotted gars" out there are just mislabeled Florida gars. There's also a tremendous amount of variability in their pattens & coloration, so just because it doesn't look exactly like other Florida gars that you have seen doesn't mean that it isn't one. There's also probably some stunting going on with it considering the previous atrocious conditions that it endured.

P.S.-- Ditch the pleco ASAP. They have been known to suck on gars' slime coats which often leads to a deadly infection; all it takes is one incident while you're not looking, and you gar could be done for.

I agree get rid of the pleco

I'm leaning towards FLG. Due to the unavailability of the true spotted gar in this hobby and also it's a endangered species, well in Canada the true SG is a species at risk. Also especially if u got that Gar for 50 bux that's hella cheap for a true spotted. The ex owner probably bought it at a LFS which they always mislabel Florida as spotted. Yours probably most likely a captive bred FLG but looks nice though. If u google FLG they have spots all over their body like yours where true spotted gars has smaller spots only on the top.

blue: LOl, nope! they are rare in the hobby but not endanger or threaten at all.
red: as far as I know their spots are the same with some variation!
