blue: LOl, nope! they are rare in the hobby but not endanger or threaten at all.
red: as far as I know their spots are the same with some variation!

Sorry I edited my post. I meant the true SG is threatened in Canada and is a species at risk. So technically endangered in Canada.

as stated in a later post, spotted gars are indeed threatened/endangered/protected in some areas, mainly the northern portions of their range. in the south they are not protected, but are considered endangered in Ohio (extirpated technically), PA (endangered), Canada (threatened/endangered), MI (species of concern).

judging by pattern (as you said) rarely works...there are some nuances, but nothing that leads to a solid ID 100% of the time.--
