I don't think I like my tinfoil barbs anymore.

all of you are saying that bichirs are really predators at night. I know that, but in my experience my bichirs did great with fish even 1/3 their size.

I am not questioning all your advice but im wondering why my bichirs are so friendly compared to all your experiences?
Isnt it just the gar hunting on them at night?

And could it be that i have a different experience from you guys since i keep the smaller bichir species? (delhezi, senegal, palmas)
I do think that my bichirs are very friendly. All my fish have no bite marks at all and i have had 1/3 of the bichir size fishes with them without any problems.

the fins of some of the barb are torn. So it is probably indeed due to stress of some other fish hunting on them.

Could maybe making the group bigger work ? (if you still like tin foil barbs) The aggression of the predatory fish on one of the barbs will decrease since there are more barbs. And the barbs will feel saver when in bigger groups potentially leading to not show this behaviour of suicide?

I will take them out of the tank and put them in my black bottom and background cyprinid tank with t barbs roselines and danios. We'll see.

Have to agree with some of the others, the gar and id wager the PBB specifically have got the barbs “on edge” so to speak. There under water “pigeons”…If not even the other fish keeping them on edge there just stupid lol. Ive had tinfoils, balas and other barb like fish just rocket into a tank wall or lid to their demise many times even in 500gal tanks. Luck of the draw 🤷🏻‍♂️… Personally id leave em be. The tables will turn when they hit 10-12”. Not bad to only have 3 when there that size neway. IMO they serve a purpose for tank cleaning and “enrichment” lol…

Assuming you’ve separated the fish and may be seeing different behavior post transfer. May we get an update?

On a.related note a previous comment mentioned that it seemed odd that a bichir might look at a 10x4 TFB as an ideal target. Bichirs can see but not well. They naturally inhabit murky water and in that environment sight isn’t a useful or necessary trait.

I’m guessing that was Thursday night while they were still in w/ the bichirs(?). That behavior probably seems odd and self destructive to most of us but in my view you’re seeing something akin to perseverance. The fish knows it needs out and nature is trying to find a way (despite not being able to calc deflection failure for glass).

I moved them tuesday night, one killed itself two days after that. Probably got scared of clown barbs hunting it now eh?
