Haha! Beats me! Bummer to hear and truth be told I've had TFB's that size over the years and never had any of them bash themselves to death. You seem to be an informed and invested aquarist so the simpleton questions didn't need to be asked. Beyond that I haven't encountered too many reasons for an otherwise healthy fish to decide it needs to bail out at any cost.

dumbest species to keep with predators constantly turning around bumping into them 24/7 when patrolling their tank- think they just snapped to the point of no return- try to raise a bunch again without predators and see if its the same thing until they are too big I see you had the gar in there too.
