a livewell is a compartment on a fishing boat that holds the catch and keeps it alive. they often have pumps to keep air cirulating.

How exactly would you get back flow? If you noticed I never said turn the water off? only to remove the hose? if the water is on then the pressure is pushing water into the tank? I suppose in the event your doing a water change and putting str8 tap water into your tank and not paying any attention? and the city turns off your water then there could be a problem.

edit:
I guess I am being over dramatic yes it can be dangerous, just like running a submersible only pump with no float switch, as it can catch fire if the moon and planets align, or using heaters of any kind, just like the water pressure keeps it from back flowing and could fail, so could your gfic. Man its a dangerous world out there.
