They're not really moss balls, they're algae. Cladophora aegagrophila.
I have some but not in ball form. I could probably make my own balls but I don't like the balls. I like when it grows all over, like a carpet.
I got some that came in an order of plants. It was a tiny tuft of Cladophora and I really didn't know what to do with it at the time so I just stuffed it into a little crack in my driftwood.
It's been 5 years since and my wood looks like this now

They are moss balls...you are right that moss balls are algae, but they are moss balls or marimo balls by name. No one ever said or thought they were moss I don't think. Do they all spread out? Do you have to roll them often to keep them in ball form? And lastly do you have any close shots of the wood? That looks like something I might do :) Did it take all five years to get it like that? Or did it go quick and just lasted a long time? Thanks strait.....
