They're not really moss balls, they're algae. Cladophora aegagrophila.
I have some but not in ball form. I could probably make my own balls but I don't like the balls. I like when it grows all over, like a carpet.
I got some that came in an order of plants. It was a tiny tuft of Cladophora and I really didn't know what to do with it at the time so I just stuffed it into a little crack in my driftwood.
It's been 5 years since and my wood looks like this now

They are moss balls...you are right that moss balls are algae, but they are moss balls or marimo balls by name. No one ever said or thought they were moss I don't think. Do they all spread out? Do you have to roll them often to keep them in ball form? And lastly do you have any close shots of the wood? That looks like something I might do :) Did it take all five years to get it like that? Or did it go quick and just lasted a long time? Thanks strait.....

Well you had moss balls. The ones before the actual Marimo balls lol.
Just being clever lol
I don't know if they eventually spread out since I've never had a Marimo ball. I know that they grow that way in Japanese streams/rivers cause of the constant back and forth motion always rolling bits of algae around and into balls. They end up collecting more and just growing that way but it's the constant motion that keeps their shape so I would imagine that in the aquarium they'd need to be rolled to be kept in the shape of a ball.
That piece of wood is only like 8" long and I never spoiled my algae so it didn't grow really fast. Then again I did start with only a small tuft which was little more than a few strands of the algae. After about 4 years with no Co2 and little-no light the algae covered just about the whole piece of wood. Only part that's not covered is the bottom.
I don't really have any good close-ups of the wood but you can see what it looked like at 3 years here

Oh, and I've kept it in brackish water too! The algae did fine, transfered over to some rocks nearby, but the wood started going bad so I moved it out.

I never really tried to take pictures of the algae itself either but it has inadvertently made it's way into one or two of my pics.

Wow! Thanks for the input. This thread is getting full of things people are afraid to ask :) I am not. Did you major in aquaculture in college? Or just avid? You have to be the most knowledgeable person in some areas on this site. C/A, Africans, Random useful facts. Just nice to have people like you here :)

I don't get it, what's so good about mossballs ?
