I'm not saying you shouldn't tell children that they have potential to pursue whatever career they want if they have that potential, but if they lack such potential, I think it would only be harmful to tell them that they could succeed at said career if they truly cannot.
 
This discussion has shifted from whether it is possible to do/be anything no matter your circumstances, which as been disproven, to what you should tell young children they are capable of. The latter is definitely much more debatable, but I think it depends on the individual circumstance of the child, and I stand by what I said about not telling children they can achieve something specific if you know they can't achieve it.
 
From what I can see me and carp are of a similar mindset and jaws and dan are also of a similar mindset although the two mindsets clash together on this topic. I don't think we can reach an agreement except perhaps to agree to disagree. Perhaps it would be best for us to let this thread die now?

Well you would have failed at being a world class wrestler but no one would have the right to tell you not to try. Furthermore YOU WOULDNT KNOW IF YOU COULD BECOME A WORLD CLASS WRESTLER UNTIL YOU TRIED.

Nope. You can have a high IQ and work at a fast food restaurant. You can't force someone to do something just because they are intelligent, intellegence is potential, that's why I don't like people who brag about having high IQs in place of real-life accomplishments. But you can't do a job that requires a very high level of intellegence if you don't have that intellegence.

Nope, there are a lot of factors at play, environment, genetics, etc.

What do you do for a living ?

Yes and there are studies that show intelligence is a learned behavior. So now you go back to IQ but then switch to problem solving. Problem solving is one of the main lessons taught in early childhood development

The guy that i mentioned earlier with the tech job. Had 0 college at the time and a GED. Got an entry level job. Within two or 3 yrs he became team lead. A few more yrs later became a VP. Many of his peers and employees had college degrees some went to ivy league schools.

Now im pretty sure someone along the way told him "you cant do that".

You simply wrong and entitled to your opinion. I wont comment any further there is no point in this conversation

Yeah, but you can't be a good problem solver if you have a very low IQ, problem solving is one area that IQ tests test for.

Cool, now you are confusing intellegence with education. Based on what he has accomplished, I would bet money that if he was given an IQ test by a psychologist, he would score average or above average, most likely above average.
