It does look more freddy than lois. and probably is a freddy. Any new pics with it less stressed?

It doesnt have the silver lining on the top part

Check out my post above. Due to the stock in my tank, it takes a little longer than a day or two for new fishes to settle into their more natural coloration. They are darker showing their subdominance until they feel more at home. And none of my loisellis have silver on their back. It's usually more pink to purple.

Oh yeah I forgot how BR00TAL your tank was haha.
Mine goes from silver to black to blue to purple so I was just saying one of its many colours :)

They're all slightly different, but also very similar. :D That's what's so hard for me when it comes to differentiating loiselli from freddy. Sometimes it's easy to tell, other times not so much. For me at least.

And the dynamics in my tank would definately surprise most people. There is no lip locking or chasing or anything like that. It's just the immediate intimidation factor when you put a 3" or 4" fish in with so many BIIIG ones. The little ones expect to be ripped apart. It just doesn't happen. It takes them a while to get used to that. Once they do, they settle down and start coloring up. This one was competing for food at the top with everybody else five minutes after going in. That's unusual for me and goes a long way to predicting a particular fish's atitude.

I use the analogy of a super max prison where nobody gets stabbed due to the shared mutual respect between gangsters. A gangster's "prison utopia" if you will, lol. New guys are scared to death when they get there, but once they realize they're not going to get raped in the chow line or stabbed in the shower on a daily basis, they settle down. If you give respect, you get respect. Likewise, if you act like prey, you'll get preyed upon.

I know what you mean. I find it very hard to differentiate between the two species when they aren't adults

Nice "Black Jag". Creative naming at your fish store.

I vote Loisellei on the ID.

no chance, it's actually quite easy to distinguish between the two species

Good post. The worm markings vs. black spots goes a long way explaining the major difference for me.
