Baisically they are a pacu that doesnt get huge!

If you want a piranha get a real piranha.

:( Looks like he will go back to the store for a black rhom...or maybe I can have them get me a real brandtii! I really do like those.

To the above poster, saying that they are a pacu that doesnt get huge, is that also saying they are not carnivorous

so what are these exactly? Are they in the pacu family?

I would like to know this too. I don't mean to sound like a macho man or something but I am not really into having a peaceful fish/vegetarian in a single specimen tank. I was really looking forward to having a big brute piranha because I want to prove myself wrong about them. And it doesn't surprise me that they got the wrong fish in because I am about 98% positive TFD supplies my LFS.

well then so far nothing is written in stone and i would get a positive ID to make sure it isn't what it is suppose to be..because it could still be a piranha because alot of people have had trouble with ID of the baby piranha..at least the people i know around here..

Dentics are definately not Pacus. They're rarer than brandtii's too from what I've noticed. They are not quite P's but they're still a cool fish to own. But, if you're looking for something that'll be a brute, you should buy a large serra species. They grow pretty slow, and having a single species pygo is pretty borring. Check out Piranha-Fury.com. You'll find a lot of information on P's. I believe they have species profiles too. Here's another link with some info on Dentics.

I am about 99.9% this is a dentic. All of the things I have read point right to it. The head is not concave and the red fins ect. I am still not sure what I will do with this fish. I really wanted a big brute but who knows I may like it right? I have read that they can be kept with other fish but I don't have the room to. Also I have read they are very boring to keep on their own. Hmmm.....What to do what to do? Anybody have personal experience with them?

I didnt say it was a pacu I said it was like!! I just mean that like a pacu its a characin, its also an omnivour. My main point when I said its like a pacu I meant that, again like a pacu, looks like a piranha but is not.

i know what you meant, but they have a little more appeal to them than pacus. I never said that you "said that they were." I'm saying that they are nicer fish (in my opinion) to own than pacus. You read my post wrong.

well the dentic you can shoal, so a fun idea might be to go get some more of them to put together.
