I Got My 253g Tank Today-It's an Open Canvas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Would love to keep an aro but I want fish that I can keep for life. I was tempted to get a Florida gar. They have 3 of them at my lfs...all 10"ers for $30. The guy kept saying it would work out fine in my tank. Glad I said no cause after reading up on them I saw they grow 30" so it's out too. I guess I'm going with a Central American community tank.

Here's what I'm thinking-1 of each:

Amphilophus Trimaculatus
Amphilophus Labiatus or other Amphilophus sp.
Vieja Argentea
Vieja Synspilium
Nandopsis tetracanthus or Herichthys Carpintis Escondido
Parachomis Managuense

6 Barbus Filamentosis
3 Red Hooks

White sand. Black background.
Large driftwood and rocks.

Filtration:
ProClear 400 with 1800gph Mag pump
Fluval FX5

Does that sound like it would work? If it's overstocked or aggression becomes a problem I could eliminate my least favorite fish as they get bigger.

This isn't the final decision btw, still open to suggestions. Please feel free to put in your 2 cents.

I like what you have planned. I would add some Pike Cichlids to the mix though. Large types, like Atabapo Fires, Sp. Venezula, Cincta's or any Lugubris types.

you wont, get an arrow due to tank size but you will get a gar this logic doesn't make sense

he just said at the top of this page that he was tempted but changed his mind

way to come in here criticizing without reading... that logic doesn't make sense

lol pay attention Mr. V :screwy:

:hitting: Gars are too big for 24" wide tanks. Just refer to the list I made above in post #12 and see if that meets your approval. Thanks and I am open to suggestions too.

I think you have a great stocking plan and I'd like to compliment you on taking the time to concider the EVENTUAL look of the tank with adults and not filling it with juvies for visual impact that will have to be moved out later.
