I just picked up 6 3/4" panda cory cats. I definitely recommend them. Adorable little buggers that never stop searching for food. :D
my neighbors have them! they started with 2 but now have 17! i read that their breeding habits are undocumented!:WHOA: I just helped them out, the lady was constantly scraping algae but I told them to go get s few snails. she said she got them yesterday and its crystal clear now:grinno:

Yeah i'd prefer not to have a brackish tank... they just look like they are always dirty to me... (if i'm thinking of the right thing (red-coloured water?))

I'm from Australia too... so that may affect fish choice?

What i was thinking of was a school of tetras (not sure which ones) and then 1-2 bristlenose and snail or 2 (i've already got 2 small snails that must have came in the gravel from the fish shop)... i like the looks of the Blue Rams...

But i'm fairly new to tropicals so i'm not really sure what to get... I'd like to have a school of fish (so probably the tetras) and then a few others so its not just all the same fish... variety in looks and personality as albirdy suggested...

I wouldn't recommend the clown loaches for this tank. They are a great choice, but for a much larger tank. I like the rummy nose and neon idea. Otherwise a shoal of emperor tetras would look nice as well.

Ok I've had a look on liveaquaria,

What i found was:
Rummynose Tetra
Cardinal Tetra
Skunk Cory Cat
Ram, German Blue

But I'm still not sure... it seems the pleco's are too big for the tank..., i couldn't find any loach's that would go in a tank smaller than 20Gal on their site...

I think the school of Tetras about 10 or so is the way to go, plus maybe a pair of blue ram's, then i'm not sure what else....

a small species of pleco would be great.. theres only about 600billion different types to chose from.. get one that tops out at 5inches or so and you will be fine
5-6 corys of whatever species you can find localy (they are a social fish and need to be in groups to be happy)
tetras are also a good choice.. rummy nose do fine in a small tank and look rather good

id stay away from rams as a starter fish.. they can be very sensitive about water conditions.. and they can be real pricks when breeding and may pick on other fish

read up on cycling and get yourself a liquid test kit... and as for snails.. unless the lfs dips their plants.. dont worry.. you will notice some soon

the only other cichlids that would fit in there are apistos, but I find them to be more finnicky than blue rams

So probably:
1x small pleco
5-6x Cory's (any suggestions as to which ones?)
?x Rummy Nose Tetra's (How many?)

As far as cycling goes... i'll need fish to do that right? Currently i've got the plants and yeah i've already got 2 small snails that must have come with the plants or gravel...

For the test kit, what do i need to get... i need to be monitoring PH, Nitrate, Ammonia, what else?

Also should i get any rocks or driftwood? would any of those fish like rocks and maybe caves setup with the rocks?

i'm getting one for xmas and doing a tiny little reef i think those tanks look cool
