I got myself a new Tropical Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I still haven't got anything for my tank yet... been so busy with work and haven't managed to get to any of the LFS's on the weekends... but i've got 5 weeks holidays starting in a week and halfs time (13th Dec)

I was thinking tonight what i'd probably like is a large school of neons... i was thinking:

8 or so neons
8 or so cadinals
1-2 small floor feeders to keep the bottom of the tank clean
and maybe 1-2 other different fish, maybe something with a bit of personality... cause the neons will school afaik so just a pair of something else... maybe something a little bigger than the others but not too big that it'll eat them all...

What do you think? will that be too much? Neons are cheap here... can get 8 for few dollars... cardinals seem to be a bit more expensive... what do you recommend for the floor feeder/s and the "interesting other fish"

upside down catfish would be sweet im no expert on these fish but i think they stay small and are nice

I had 12 neon tetras in a 20H AGA tank. It did not seem to me like there was enough room for them to shoal. I ended up transferring them to a 29 AGA tank and eventually to a 65 AGA tank. I currently have a total of 32 neon tetras in the 65, along with 8 lemon tetras. My tetras seem to shoal together more now that they are in a bigger tank. They had a tendency to go their separate ways in the smaller tanks. That being said, I think that a betta will get along with the neons, cards, and cories that you have on your stock list, for a splash of color. Personally, I would probably do a heavily planted tank with some cherry barbs and some cories if I had your tank. Whatever fish you choose to go with, some more pics would be nice! :)

Well i've finally got some fish in my tank... my brother got me 10 Neon Tetras for Christmas... and it looks like i've got a pregnant one too :-) Just got them this arvo... they seem to be happy swimming togeather as a group around the tank... :-)

I'm going to get a catfish of some sort, something small, the fish shop had a few suggestions... can't remember which ones... and probably some barbs...

and dunno probably a couple of others...

Neons are not livebearers. They cannot get pregnant as these are egg scatterers. They are notoriously difficult to breed so I wouldn't hope too much they will breed.

Well I checked my ammonia levels last night and it was 0 :-)

So i went to the fish shop today and i've bought:

A pair of Neon Blue Dwarf Gourami, the female is quite timed yet... she hides down around the base of the plants under the driftwood when anyone goes near the tank but once you are away she comes out and swims around...

And two little bristlenose catfish :-)

So i think that'll about do for my tank i think... probably can't really go for much more without overcrowding the tank right?

It's basically how i wanted it anyway... a small school of fish: 10 neon tetras, a couple of colourful "feature" fish: the gourami's (well the male), and the cleaner fish: the bristlenose's...

What do you think?

Hi Birdie! How's your tank doing? I think you have a pretty good thing going there! I think you can add 5-15 more neon tetras in there, after a quarantine period of course! Your gouramis will occupy the top part of your tank whilst the neons will fill up your mid- to lower-levels. You can probably add a school of corydoras for some action on the substrate! Just make sure you get at least six of these because they like to keep their own company! And make sure that you also feed them, not just count on having them subsist on leftovers! (Shrimp pellet, algae wafers, etc.) You might even see the corys spawning if your water conditions are good! GL!
