under a bridge in fl
i got permission to dig my own pond on my parents land :headbang2:headbang2

most of it will be dug by hand unless i find someone with a tractor.

now,how to do this,hmmmm.......

size,not small,not to big
square,round,rectangle,triangle,peace sign,mfk sign? :grinno:
liner,no liner?
filter,no filter but a fountain for air?
stock it with?
breed what?

kick some ideas to me :D

power will be an issue tho :irked:
maybe a solar panel for the pump?
is there a pond size that wouldnt need a pump/filter?
i might be able to bury an extension cord.

i might be breaking ground this weekend.
will start a picture show then like always
:D

lets see how this turns out.lol
:D

by hand huh? I know we are friends and all but...:uhoh:

Make it with shelves and a bog. Alot of Larger preds like hang out under a shelve and wait for prey to swim over them. The bog will let you grow some reed plants to eat the nitrates.

If you go small then use a liner. If you have rain like I get up in NNY, then go big and no liner.

I don't use a filter. I have enough reeds and 350K gallons. I do use a Quiet one 14000 to power a fountain in the summer and to keep a section unfrozen in the winter.

Pima fishing? lol

I kid.. I kid.. Cool though@! Congrats! Can't wait to hear more info..

lol not going to be that big :grinno:

just playing with numbers on one of those sites that tells you how many gallons it will be.

measurements sound huge when doing it by hand,
but the amount of gallons in the end doesnt sound like much.
lol :grinno:

this is just a start/guess
20' long x 10' wide x 4' deep = 6000g
or
20' long x 15' wide x 4' deep = 9000g

4' deep should do ok in the winter right?
figured 4' sounds good cus my seine is 4'
plus i think 4' will be good to keep it warm.

suggestions?

what kind of ground are you dealing with??? is it clay? red or gray?, is it rocky?, is it sandy?

if its not hardpacled clay then dig it by hand, mine was shail rocks, bricks and hard paclked clay, with shelves of hardened rock. so a BIG excavator was a must.

if its 20"X10'X4" you will need a liner thats 30-35"X15-20" and thats going to cost you about $500... with the felt underlayment it might be $600 but old carpet works great.

rocks. rocks are expensive, and decoration is alot. use granit bolders/flagstone fot your waterfall or any movingwater. a fountin is nice but utterly useless... with a small waterfall you will be able to better airate and filter your water. for a tank that size you will be aiming for a 6000-7000 GPH pump. although you will be ablke to get away with 5000GPH... beter overdo then under.

I would run a line out there to run your pump rith a receptical, this should run you aboyt $100 max for the conduet and whats required.
whatever you use to dig it, use the ground to build a small waterfall that curves around the pond, this airaites the water and hives you a good place for a filter that can easly be descised, also provides shade is positioned well.... also getting rid of fill is expensive, i paid almost 1 grand for a guy to haull away 13000gallons of crap away. that was 5 dump truckloads. but i had nowhere to put it?...

next pump or filter. you can make it. mening useing some liner make a 24"X24" hole in the ground/top of waterfall and run your outlet pipe to the bottom, fill with scrubbies or lava rocks or if your made of money bio balls. then ontop filter wool and a bag of 3/4 crushed gravle/scree to keep the bio media from going everywhere.... or you can het a tetra brand pond filter thats all in one.

im sure i missed something but it sleep time for me. ps my liner is 50'X30', cost me over a grand just for the liner... dont use a tarp, font use a bag or anything like that, this is not where you want to cheap out. and its cheaper then poaring concreet and sealing it.

also one 1'X2' section needs to be 4'... not the whole pond. and only koi will survive the winter, not aros, they will die when it gots to 40degrees. i would stock koi. it is a pond after all... if you dont have a winter then only fo 3' MAX. i would have most of the pond at 24"-30" and deaper and you might not see the fish. any shallower and preditors will pick them off...

you sure can make someone not want to do something
and heres a book for your book

i want this cheap and easy and easy to keep up on.
if theres a bunch of plants will a lil waterfall work?lol

ground,not sure
hard,rocky,then gray sand im guessing.

liner,e bay there cheaper then that
heres a few just off the top
30x30 is 300
20x25 180
15x20 140

im thinking no liner.lol
so to do no liner, pretty much just dig till you hit water then dig how deep you want it?lol

decor,i can get free plants, few rocks.
dont plan to decorate to much.
mainly thinking breeding pond of some sort.

pump
wasnt thinking that big.lol
not sure what size
i plan to have the size on my side plus plants to help filter.
maybe a small pond next to it with nothing but plants.
pump water to it and make it flow back to the big pond?

also getting rid of fill is expensive, i paid almost 1 grand for a guy to haull away 13000gallons of crap away. that was 5 dump truckloads. but i had nowhere to put it?...
we use it as fill so it actually is like saving that much money.lol
my parents main pond,
the dirt from the pond was used for the house foundation and driveway. :D

the dirt from my pond,
i was going to use it to make like a berm around the pond.
that way i wouldnt have to dig as deep "if i use a liner".
and my fish wont flood out as easy.
:headbang2

i thought about concrete but im trying to make it a cheap project.lol

depth
thats an idea,do like a pool, lil spot deep then get shallower.
and i think i will put birds netting over it to protect them from predators.

koi, dont want it a koi pond really.
some koi might end up there one day tho.lol
not sure what to put in it.lol
thinking $ like breeding stuff to sell.

think thats all i have right now :D
