Im think that you only dig down 3 feet or so, and that dirt that was dug to be placed around the pond and then covered with pond liner. Much like this picture.

Any method of building is going to cost a decent amount of money. Definitely go big. Buy the most effecient and largest pump poss. Buy a good quality liner and look for woven geo-textile underlayment. Again, more money upfront, but better in the long run. Carpet pad works but degrades over time. As far as a breeeding project, thats probally going to require a heater of some sort. If you don't have electric by the pond this will add more costs.
Not trying to sound like Debbie Downer, but careful planning can be the difference between pond or puddle. I have built several ponds and they are easy and can be realatively inexpensive. Gather as many buddies you can find and dig it by hand. You will be able to really define planting pockets and edges digging by hand. Hope this doen't discourage, it is really meant to get you to plan it out carefully. Not just start digging one weekend.

you sure can make someone not want to do something
and heres a book for your book

i want this cheap and easy and easy to keep up on.
if theres a bunch of plants will a lil waterfall work?lol

ground,not sure
hard,rocky,then gray sand im guessing.

liner,e bay there cheaper then that
heres a few just off the top
30x30 is 300
20x25 180
15x20 140

im thinking no liner.lol
so to do no liner, pretty much just dig till you hit water then dig how deep you want it?lol

decor,i can get free plants, few rocks.
dont plan to decorate to much.
mainly thinking breeding pond of some sort.

pump
wasnt thinking that big.lol
not sure what size
i plan to have the size on my side plus plants to help filter.
maybe a small pond next to it with nothing but plants.
pump water to it and make it flow back to the big pond?

we use it as fill so it actually is like saving that much money.lol
my parents main pond,
the dirt from the pond was used for the house foundation and driveway. :D

the dirt from my pond,
i was going to use it to make like a berm around the pond.
that way i wouldnt have to dig as deep "if i use a liner".
and my fish wont flood out as easy.
:headbang2

i thought about concrete but im trying to make it a cheap project.lol

depth
thats an idea,do like a pool, lil spot deep then get shallower.
and i think i will put birds netting over it to protect them from predators.

koi, dont want it a koi pond really.
some koi might end up there one day tho.lol
not sure what to put in it.lol
thinking $ like breeding stuff to sell.

think thats all i have right now :D

wait, you mean to say that there is more to a pond than just a hole full of water

invisyblegypsey,my parents have some of that for there gate lights :)

Mystix212,lol,nice picture :D
and ya that was one of the ideas i said lol :D

Muske,no heater,im in fl,thats my heater :D
and im thinking no liner to save money to.

Onion01,thats what i was thinking
dig hole
add water
add plants
small waterfall
add fish
enjoy
hey,anything is possible,watch,hehe.lol
joking

Liner should be cheaper and a lot less labor intensive that concrete.

i think i forgot to mention one key thing....
im only a few feet above sea level so the water isnt far underground
its not like im up north where theres no water or on a hill.
:D
so no liner is way easier for me then 99% of the people on here.lol
just figured i would say that
:grinno:

I do...but where to start?!

Those cute little excavators (pocket steam shovels) cost $200 a day (plus $50 delivery and fuel).

Don't your parents have a pond?
