"get a job " is the worst advice to give to someone under 24.....staying in school and getting a education , the higher , the better is key......at a young age the brain should be stimulated not numbed by meaningless jobs.

Meaningless jobs yes. But experience you gain from having those jobs! and seeing how reality really is. Also, flipping meat patties is an experience you will never forget.

let's see ....option 1: studying an entire summer in order to get an SAT score that entitles you to a full scholarship worth 80K and sets the foundation for a a bright future.
option2: flip burgers for 7$/hour to save money for a fish tank , while planning on getting a huge school loan that will take decades to pay off

I guess that "experience" that you get while flipping burgers comes at a heavy price.

edit: and how many of these full scholarship people have recently had their bright future become very dark in these present economic times?
Dude, so you suppose education is the only path to success :ROFL:

I am 42 years old have been working the so called meaningless jobs for most of my life that is until 13 years ago I stepped out and started my own meaningless restaurant, and here we are 13 meaningless years later sitting in my restaurant surrounded by 1600 g of active water over 9 140g + tanks with an empty 168g and an empty 10ft 300g just to my left and to my right.

I will not even mention my asset portfolio amongst other things.

Have care when you try to disuade a young person from their dream you will only make them more desirous of seeing it realized no matter the cost!

ROCK ON BANG A GONG OP GO FOR IT GET THAT BIG TANK AND ROCK YOUR WORLD!!!!!!

Getting a job and scholarship or financial aid aren't mutually exclusive. I know many people have done it.

By working at a crappy job, it helps you appreciate your real job or career in the future.

no I didn't imply that education it's the only way to success but it's a proven way to fulfill your intellectual capacity .....something that money can't really buy.
but since for you success it's measured in gallons seems like you found the answer ;)

tbh, I wish I could have a job in some ways but being young is awesome. No work, just school ;P

I'm only 12. :L

I have a 75g and might be getting a slight upgrade/new tank :P

im 16 and saved for my 200gal for acouple of years i have a job at a lfs and i can tell u now the buying of the tank is a tiny part of the expenses, i work 2 days a week and give pretty much all my wages back to my boss on the way out the door each week for various essential bits and bobs. unless u can afford the upkeep stick to the 55 and 75, i had 2 30's a 45 and several reptile vivs all of which have gone sinse i got the big tank due to its running cost.

Not at all!!!! Getting a job helps to teach responsibility, which for many of todays youth is non-existant. There must be a balance between a good education and a good work ethic. Just having a degree doesn't mean you will find a job. Those scholarships are not as frequent as some would have you believe. A solid work history will provide a better job than a degree will. And having the experience in the field you get your degree in will put you head and shoulders above the other applicants trying for the same position.

Chef has it pretty well right in the above posts. OP Follow your dream, nothing worth having is going to be free or easy to get. My suggestion is to talk with your parents to see if it is even a possibility to have that big of a tank. It will cost a lot more to keep it up. ?? for you, who pays for the two tanks you have now? Is it feasible for you to pick up odd jobs in your neighborhood? Save your money, do your research, find out how much the tank will cost to maintain, is it still worth it after knowing the maintenance costs? And of course the really big ? is will mom and dad let you have that big of a tank?

As far as being frustrated at being young. ENJOY it while you can!!! Believe us old farts, time will go by much faster than you think. the key is to enjoy it and follow your dreams!! If you spend the time and energy doing what you want to do then you will not notice the time and in a few years you will wake up and go " 30?!?, Dang I am turning 30?!? When the heck did that happen?"

Ok getting off my soap box now.
