Sorry for your losses. Had a loss of power almost a year ago so I remember seeing similar. On a more positive note you have some cool fish. Glad some of them made it.

something shorted or got wet, that is what caused it to kick off

not all died, but ya, no air or filtraion over night in both tanks = bad things
i have a powerhead that has a tubing attachment that draws air and puts oxygen in the water that helps more than you'd expect. i was without power for 10 hrs and not one loss. i've got some decent size fish and alot of them in my 210 gal. battery powered airator the kind you'd use in a live well works great too. you can get them pretty cheap and just get a 12v battery from walmart and you're in buisness.

Sounds like it was a GFI outlet. If that's the case be careful and keep an eye on it because defective equipment will trip it. The chance of all heaters kicking on at the same time is slim, but it could happen. It could have also been from a connection to ground that got loose or a simple water splash out of the tank.

Sorry for your loss:( Those were some beautiful fish.
I am not an electrician, so this advice should be taken with a grain of salt.

But I hate GFI outlets for that very reason. They are very sensitive and will trip off sometimes for no good reason. Because of this, despite safety warnings, I never run any of my tanks off them (or my freezer). I think it's code to put them in a garage and basement because in theory they have a high chance of getting wet.. But I think it's more dangerous to have them running something critical. The OP might want to switch his GFI plug to a regular plug. Also, see what else is on the circuit. If the house is recent construction, Lord only knows what is chained off that circuit.. It could be a basement, outside plugs, basement plugs, basement lights (that's how my house was wired by the cheap builder). You might want to run a dedicated 20 amp line to the garage for the fish tank.
