How many scombies do you guys think I Can house for life in my 240? I have 8 right now :D. I know Ill be moving the datnoids to a bigger tank when they get to about 12". So with two nandus nandus and 8 scombies... How many more can I put in there without having the fish feel cramped?

From the looks of that tank, I'd say you could fit quite a bit more. Even though their max size is around 14", I have only seen 1 even pass the 10" mark. You don't have any aggression? When I had 3, they kept slashing eachother up

I'd be a little concerned about the Scombs possibly injuring their eyes if they dart quickly through those twigs.Other than that I like the look but not sure how many more you could ideally house in that tank though.

They are like basses in that aspect. They keep each other in check, few minor scuffles here and there. Nothing major. Also, all of them are roughly around the same size.

Yeah Ill probably stop at 8. It is a good number. I have / had the same concern regarding them messing their eyes up in the twigs. But they are surprisingly agile... I had 6 5" chinese algae eaters that were surfing over the wood all the time. Scombs got hungry a day or two ago and bam! All six were gone, and these algae eaters were between the twigs all the time!

By the time the dat grows to 12 inches the scombs will be dying of old age - they live a year 2 max.

I think they live longer than that in the wild... Lets see. I'm going to try and document as much as possible about the life and death of scombs.

I agree. It all really depends on how big it is when you get it. I got 3 at about 2" that I had for over 2 years before I sold them. The new owner still has them and this was last year when I sold them

The main problem with scombs is that they mature at under a foot. Most of the wild caught ones that we buy are already sexually mature adults. The fish obviously won't last as long as a baby armatus or [insert other fish normally imported as YoY here]. Most smaller characins aren't very long lived and if you buy a large, mature specimen of an already short lived species, then all of a sudden it makes sense that they don't last over two years.

Just my opinion on the matter anyway.
