The main problem with scombs is that they mature at under a foot. Most of the wild caught ones that we buy are already sexually mature adults. The fish obviously won't last as long as a baby armatus or [insert other fish normally imported as YoY here]. Most smaller characins aren't very long lived and if you buy a large, mature specimen of an already short lived species, then all of a sudden it makes sense that they don't last over two years.
Just my opinion on the matter anyway.
Either way, I freakin love scombs! Very under appreciated but they were the first payara I ever kept and I always will have a spot for them. Even though they're not as personable as armies are, they're still a lot of fun to have and watch eat.

one advantage to scombs is their smaller size, they can live in smaller tanks like 75 on up. however there are disadvantages starting with weaning off of live foods - not impossible but very uncommon for the amount of fish that are captured and sold. I bet I've had 10 scombs over the years and only 1 made it over a year in life span - that one died at 2 years one month and his diet was mollies. personally I felt as thou that was a great accomplishment and very rewarding thru the process. It was also a major pain in the arse getting live fish every single week.
coolest moments were when he shed his teeth, I knew when the new ones came in the fish was healthy
They are fun! How long did yours survive?
I had mine for about 2 years before I sold them last year. The buyer still has them today so they're actually about 3yo now!
