I have a datnoid payaradiction!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A sad thing happened.. Just noticed that two of my datnoids died :(.
Water conditions were (using API test kit for all four):
- ammonia 0
- nitrite 0
- nitrate 0 (yeah hard to believe but the bio load is extremely low for a 240 gallon...)
- PH constant at 7.5
- temp at 82 degrees
- high in o2 (using 3 air pumps that have 2 outlets each so a total of 6 airstones placed where the return pump is at the back of my tank).
- did a 30 % water change yesterday and added prime anti stress to the water.
I have a water softener / de chlorinator / remove all bad elements installed in the plumbing to my house.
Got the dats shipped in on thursday. Any idea as to why they died? I'm really confused and saddened.

One of them had a cloudy eye which is not unusual cause the fish is probably stressed, but I added salt and turned up the temp from 80 to 82. The other one was just fine... The sad thing is this is the first time I've had a dat die on me.

I usually qt all new fish and treat them with an api general cure - transport is very rough on fish, isolation helps to relax them.

Not saying that's the problem - could be simply a salinity/homeostasis issue as a lot of dats lived in brackish conditions.

sorry for your lose

Update: After doing a lot of research and my laziness to train my payaras to eat non live food, I decided to goto the local asian market and get myself 6 female and 1 male tilapia. I feed the tilapias veggies (with a LOT of garlic) and pellets (occasionally) they and the result is: From today onwards, I don't have to get minnows anymore! The tilapias breed like bunnies and the babies grow fast!
