I have finally given in...My 10' Pool Progress

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I thought the duckweed was a cover... LOL

That's a color only an MFK'r could love :D

The duck weed that thick will do in the green water algae by excluding the light (don't choke out your fish with too much anacharis ;)).

You need circulation to keep the water from stratifying and you need to vacuum up any trash on the bottom, then start the bio-filter back up to help with aeration.

Remember..Fight the good fight!

Yeah, I have been keeping the bottom as clean as I can...I also added a powerhead to keep the water moving around. The only problem with running my bio filter is that it cascades down and the duckweed ends up in a big ball all stuck together....Basically it doesn't let the duckweed float. With as little fish as I have, any waste should easily be eaten up by the plants.

Here are some pictures of what it used to look like (with hardly any plant life)...

As for livestock-I was thinking larger native fish like gar and bass, but now I am thinking about having a ton of small fish like my bluefin killies, least killies and swamp darters...Once this is all over they will love all the anarchis and other plants. I forgot to mention that along with the anarchis, I have hygrophila, cabomba and some random cuttings from my planted tanks also.

Get one of those foam worms that they use of swimming and make a half circle out from the side wall and let the filter drain back in there the foam will hold the duckweed back (similar to the float you have in there now).

That's going to hold a mess of killies :nilly:.

Do you belong to the killie club and do you catch wild?

Dr. Joe-I will try the barrier idea for sure! I don't know why I didn't think of that, even when I have those tubes that will be perfect...

About the killies-I am not in any club, I collect all my killies localy. I collect fish often for my work-so when our tanks get taken down for any reason, fish end up at my house instead of released back into the wild.

I have never really been interested in the rare killies, I like keeping Florida's natives...It's funny when people ask where I got the fish and I tell them a ditch on the side of the road!

LOL

Next time your in a ditch ;), dig up a bunch of cattails, rinse them in a bucket with pond water and replant in plant baskets http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=5519 (HD has them cheap) with gravel. Invert some 5g or 6g buckets (pool chemical supplies thro these out regularly) or milk crates in the pond as pedestals for the plants (in the water flow is best). They are one of the best filter plants and you can't beat the price this side of theft :D.
