I have finally given in...My 10' Pool Progress

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the comments everyone! Unfortunately, I cannot keep up with cleaning now that the duckweed has consumed the whole pond. Leaves are falling like crazy right now and there is no way to keep them out. I have it drained for now until they stop falling.

Don't worry though-it will be up and running as soon as possible. I am considering moving it to the east side of my house, to avoid the intense afternoon sun. If it doesn't move, I will take this downtime to make a canopy of some sort to shade it.

I am going to start off right this time no matter what...That means loading it full of plants from the first day and making sure I have those plants before hand. My mistake last time was waiting until I filled it to go find some plants...Then I find out my favorite canal had just been sprayed and everything was dead or dying! I searched for a few weeks before finding a few pathetic plants, and then gave up when it got colder.

About the lillies...They were not getting splashed at all, just in a pretty decent flow to were they were moving around a good bit. I had 3 in that tank, and the one furthest in the corner did the best because I assume it got tossed around the least...But who knows.

In a small enclosure like a tank, the flow would def. cause some problems. Out in a pond w/much more surface area and space, the flow shouldn't effect growth. Maybe you can use your tanks as a plant nursery?

Muske- What do you mean by using my tanks as a plant nursery? I already have two planted tanks that are overflowing with plants, but most of them are plants that I would not put in my pool. I don't have any substrate in the pool to put rooted plants into, and most of them would have no noticable affects on the pool as a whole. I have mainly java ferns, anubias, american val, etc...

If you mean to just keep a tank full of plants to throw in the pond at a later time-that would be a good idea...But my other tanks have fish that beat up or devour anything green. I rely on the local areas staying full of plants, which usually works out fine but like I said my favorite spot has been sprayed to death lately.

Road Trip....

UPDATE TIME!!!

The pool has been re-done completely now...for the last time. I moved it to the back of my house, under an oak tree, for a while until I got sick of leaves and crap falling in all day and night.

It is now back in the old spot, but with a "cover" and better filtration. I actually like it this way because I don't have to worry about algae, leaves or anything else falling in it and making me work hard to keep it clean. The water should stay crystal clear now that nothing but fish and some plants will be in it.

The filtration is the same old pump that comes with the pool, but now I have a large drum full of lava rock and a huge mat of filter floss. This will probably be plenty of bio filtration for whatever I want to put in here, not including the plants.

Stock as of now is just test fish, 5 convicts, 2 jewel cichlids and some platys. These will all be food for larger fish later on. I am trying to get a small florida gar, bullhead catfish and maybe a few oscars. The pool is not heated in the winter, but it doesn't get too cold down here....So, I have to keep fish that can tolerate it.

Anyways, here are some updated pictures...Nothing fancy for now as it is still cycling....I am dumping a ton of java moss and salvinia in it soon.

nice looking setup. You should have used one of those picnic awnings. You can get them for about $20. It would look better than the tarp.

Yeah, but for whatever reason these convicts don't like raising babies. Every time the fry get to the sticky swimming head stage they eat them.

I was thinking about the big white tents that people use on the beach, but it would attract attention from the street...They are higher than my fence, and I can just see some kids slashing or dumping something in it one night. The pool is on the side of my house, close to the street...

I also could not find any of those tents that would be big enough for under $80 or so... It would need to be at least 12x12.
